Who was the previous cell provider ?
Go to the top of this page and click Get Started. Scroll down to the compatibility section to see if your phone will work here and if it's been reported lost / stolen.

Log into your account to check the status. Try turning off your phone the turn it back on

Can you log into self service and see what the account status is?
Is the phone unlocked?

Can you try the SIM in another phone?
What make/model/submodel is your phone?
Is it unlocked?
Is it compatible to Public Mobile?
Is it not blacklisted?
