I read somewhere here that DataWitness app can be used free by public members. It can track data usage. not sure about costs tho.

Any free app can be used for free on any device on any network. Except, of course, for apps designed by other carriers to provide their subscribers with special services (ie: ways to subscribe to and pay for additional services).
DataWitness is popular, though dozens of free apps on the Play Store which have similar functions would work just as well. (Given that some offerings are always better than others, some are buggy, some are invasive, some are ugly, etc.)

It will be very nice if PM would implement warning when you are reaching some percentage (80%?) on your regular data allowance so you do not go into add-on accidentally. Maybe you are keeping data add-on for some special occasion...

@str8jak I use datawitness as well. Very simple app that tracks data as I would expect.

@str8jak Also check Data Usage Manager (formally known as Data Counter Widget ), it is quiet good

Any data tracing app on your phone will give you only approximate data usage. The most accurate is tracking by PM and you can see it on self-serving account.

@str8jak I use DataWitness. It works well, available through the Play Store. No cost to use it though it hasn't been updated in a couple years or so. But works well.
