My Public Mobile Internet IP address is Vianet

When I check my public Mobile IP address it is VianetTV Inc 198.251.56.28. This is not correct. It should be a Telus IP address.

I found the solution. For some reason the WIFI IP address was still being used so I placed it in airport mode and activated only data service and it reported the correct IP as Telus 209.171.88.xx. I didn't recognize the initial IP address Vianet because my ISP is vmedia but for some reason it shows as vianet.

@CellphoneuserPM if your phone is connected to a WiFi network, it's normal to see that provider's IP address as your active data connection rather than your mobile carrier.

Vmedia is a virtual provider without their own network, and they resell other providers' physical services (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMedia#Internet), so I'm not surprised you didn't see an IP address owned by Vmedia--they likely don't have any of their own.  That Wikipedia page doesn't mention Vianet, but their website (https://www.vianet.ca/) seems to suggest they are also a virtual reseller.  Why do I say that?  Their Internet products page lists both cable and DSL options--most physical providers offer one or the other.  E.g. cable TV providers like Rogers and Shaw typically offer cable internet while phone providers like Telus and Bell typically offer DSL, though those lines are likely more blurred these days than in the past.  So the long and short of it is that Vmedia might be purchasing their services through Vianet which itself then sources them from the physical networks.  Just my theory.  The point of it all being that none of what you saw is actually unusual or unexpected.  🙂

The databases for IP address ownership location aren't always up to date. As Vianet is a an ISP in Canada, this will not affect your geolocation locked (locked to only Canadian IP addresses) websites and streaming content.  You can safely ignore this.
