MMS is not working with pictures.

My wife and I have the same plan.  We don't have data (except the freebies given to us from time to time), and we keep data off so we don't incur extra charges.  However, she can TEXT and add a photo when on our local WiFi, but I cannot.  Should you be able to send photos while using MMS on Wifi?

@Mark_PM  - it varies on the model, yes.

Try this on your s10e :
Turn chat features on or off
  1. On your device, open Messages .
  2. At the top right, tap More. Settings.
  3. Tap Chat features.
  4. Toggle "Enable chat features" on or off.

I press MESSAGES, hit the three vertical dots, select SETTINGS and I have no Chat features.  I can press MORE SETTINGS, then I have:

Multimedia Messages

Push Messages ON/OFF

Broadcast Channels ON/OFF

Delete old Messages

I selected Multimedia Messages and I have:

Download automatically ON/OFF.

I'll google where the CHAT features are ... but I did go an limit the apps using background data. Thanks for your help.

@Mark_PM  if the Chat Features is enabled on the device, try turning that feature off.

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chat features.
  3. Turn Enable chat features off.

@Mark_PM : You might also want to go through each app and turn off it's own background data usage. There are also a couple settings in wifi and developer options to not let it flip to mobile data.

NDesai is likely right with the interpretation that the A5 is using RCS which can do its own thing with wifi let alone mobile data. But I also would be interested in you verifying that it doesn't flip in and out of mobile data for that moment that it sends an MMS.

I checked and she is using the native texting app with data turned off under Connections/Data Usage/Mobile Data OFF).  She can text with added pictures on her A5.

I tried turning Mobile data ON on my S10e and my texting does work with pictures now, but I assumed that would be the case as it is allowing data through ... but I am hoping as mentioned by several it isn't going against my data usage.  I turned Data saver ON (it was previously OFF) to help background apps not to use Mobile data while it is turned on but rather use WiFi.  I'm not sure what happens when I am away from WiFi and background data wants to trickle in ...?

I will try this an see what it does.

Thank you, I understand I have to have data on to use MMS and you won't be charged, but by the very fact you leave data on, isn't that trickling down your available free megabytes (not for MMS) but email and Facebook etc that is constantly updating in the background?

@Mark_PM As mentioned above, your wife must have RCS feature turned on to send picture messages through WiFi. If your phone supports it, you can also enable this and use it. I used to use it on my Pixel, but I had to turn it off because messages including SMS were not delivering unless I have WiFi or data turned on. It supposed to automatically figure out I am not connected to Data or WiFi and send the text normally, but it still doesn't do that last time I checked. So best option for you is to turn on your data to send MMS. Public Mobile will not charge you anything extra since it's a prepaid service. MMS will work even if you don't have data available in your plan, but data must be turned on to send and receive MMS.

What phones are you using? Maybe someone here can help you with the settings.

Thank you @grantt for info.

This is interesting and maybe specific to Telus (and maybe other providers) since your wife had blocked data on Telus side (not at phone). Maybe Telus somehow 'unlocked' MMS send/receive since no data at all?

I guess you never asked Telus how MMS works? Just for better understanding...

Thank you for your speedy reply.  My wife has a Galaxy A5 and I have verified that data is off (Cellular Network is turned OFF), she is on home WiFi and sent a TEXT message with a photo to my daughter and she received it fine.  I have a S10e and under the same circumstances as above, cannot attach a photo.  There is something here I am not understanding.

Are you 100% positive your wife is using native texting phone's app (app which came with the phone)? Or by some chance she is using some texting app from 3rd party?

From my experience there is no way to send MMS (pictures, etc. through native texting app) through WiFi. You have to have DATA on in order to send/receive MMS. Your data allocation will not be used and you can check that when logged into your PM account.

Go into the Messages app on your phones and compare the settings (go into the three dots area, and settings).

There are some setting there "Enable Chat Features" etc. that may be set differently on the two devices...

@Mark_PM : On your wifes phone, try another picture text and the moment you press send, watch the bars and indicators up top. Do you see LTE or maybe an H appear? That would indicate the automatic flip in/out of data for that sending.

But you'll need to turn on data. I used to use an S7 that had that nice automatic feature. My current A31 does not.

Not sure what the problem is with it but wanted to mention that MMS while needing data on doesn’t consume data. It uses data that doesn’t come out of your plan data thus you don’t actually need to have any available data remaining. Just data turned on. Also as mentioned, even the $15 plan does give you 250 MB of data even if you don’t have Autopay set up (unadvertised feature) so there isn’t too much reason to not have data on. It is use it or lose it. But I know, not completely related to what you are trying to resolve.

iPhone to iPhone. Or Apple to Apple products CAN do over wifi......no data required.

So....do either of you have an iPhone?

And no monthly data.....are you sure? Like 250mb on $15 plan.

@Mark_PM : No. MMS needs cellular/mobile data on. Some phones can flip in/out for that task. Others you need to turn it on. iMessage uses instant messaging between idevices. That's why it works on wifi. But even still, to send a picture to a non-iphone would need data on (someone can verify that assertion).

@Mark_PM  MMS does not use WiFi.  In order to send pictures with texts, you must have data turned on (even if you don't have a data plan, or don;t have any data left in your plan).  Keep in mind that there are no extra charges with Public mobile.  Everything is prepaid, so if it runs out, it just stops.

Edit:  About your wife being able to send images with texts while on WiFi - is she on an iPhone by chance?  Apple does things 'differently', depending on configuration/setup.
