If you're out of province what to do

dohadotahmed
Model Citizen / Citoyen Modèle

I am on province wide unlimited calling plan. Because the plan is province wide so if I am out of province I can text people in my province and also data coverage is Canada wide. The only problem is calling people in the home province and also getting incoming calls without the long distance add on.

I can solve the outbound call problem by using Google hangouts by setting up outbound caller ID for my pm number so people know that I am calling them.

But what about the incoming call? Is there any other way to do the trick. Asking for your opinions and Thanks.

That is not true. My settings are:

- busy: voicemail
- unanswered: voicemail
- unreachable: Fongo (airplane mode, phone off, out of country, out of province(unconfirmed?)

With these settings, I was able to receive calls on Fongo while I was in Costa Rica when people dialed my cell number.

Out of country/airplane mode and phone turned off are the same type of thing but if you're out of province then the phone is detected by the network and the conditional call forwarding will go straight to your voicemail instead of fonego not sure but some people are reporting this.
That's why when you're out of province the unconditional call forwarding I.e. always forward is the only possible solution right now until someone confirmed the conditional call forwarding works with out of province situation.

Yes that is correct. My bad (I misread your post)... in your post you said nothing about province so I "assumed" you were speaking generally.

My Bad

As far as out of province goes, yes I would not be surprised that you are still seen by the network so conditional forwarding would not work (as you stated).  I am leaving my settings as they are because my phone is always on and I am also close to the US border so Iwould not have to think about changing it before I leave.

Thanks for your response.

Some other people mention in this thread that conditional call forwarding will not work because always go to voicemail and it's true.

So you have to set call forwarding as always forward to get things work properly.

It goes straight to voicemail if you are out of province I heard...

If that is true, perfect (but I am not sure that is 100% correct: see below*!  It will work if one sets up the following (as seen on a Google Android Phone)

- Unanswered - voicemail

- Busy - Voice Mail

- Unreachable - Fongo/Landline where you are/Pizza Guy/Whatever

The point is when you are in province and your phone is on and NOT in airplane mode, your phone will ring and go to voicemail as a default. If you are out of Province, or on Airplane mode you will forward to whatever you setup as unreachable.

The caveat: If your phone is off, your calls will go to Fongo as well, but Fongo has free vmail (not sure how many are stored)

* I was in Montreal near the PET Airport, and a friend was in Ottawa with an 819 number. When he called me, my phone rang (not fongo).  I could not call him though.  According to what has been posted (here and elsewhere) if one is out of province they cannot receive calls unless they have an add-on (which I don't).  I think it is possible to receive calls in the province you are in, if the caller is also in the province (or has the right area code)... but nobody will confirm or deny this - but my testing shows it might be true.

Yes I tested on my phone by putting airplane mode on and WiFi on as suggested by @Shutdown to pretend out of province.
I was able to get call forwarding from pm to fongo worked properly.
Excellent job. Thanks.

It goes straight to voicemail if you are out of province I heard so it should have the same effect since in airplane mode it will go straight to voicemail. We're just seeing if it can forward to his fongo number but another thing I just realized is doesn't our voicemail take only a limited amount of voicemail? What will happen once it gets full? Will it override old voicemails or simply reject all new ones? I suppose he could simply change his voicemail message to tell people to call his fongo number instead? Although it may not even play the voicemail message once the voicemail is full.

That is maybe not true.  If you put your phone on airplane mode you are definitely "unreachable" as you are not seen by the (Canadian) network.

However, if you are out of province, the network may not consider you "unreachable". Your plan does not allow you to receive calls, but that may not be unreachable technically.

I wish a mod would chime in because my minor testing yeilded confusing results (see below). @Shazia_K@Mary_M, Do you know?

@dohadotahmed  If you forward unconditionally to Fongo it is guranteed to work while in Canada.  I was hoping I could set busy/unansswered to Vmail, and unreachable to FOngo and leave it on a permanent basis.  I tried testing it, but I was sill and the test failed (I am local Ottawa On, and was in Montreal. I ad someone call me but they were in Ottawa at the time with a QC number. Ironically, the call went through on my phone which confused me because I thought I would not be able to get calls regardless.. and I was unable to call them.  I should have asked his wife to call me as her number is local Ottawa...)

I think this is the only way to get incoming call to my pm number. Can someone please confirm this setting while traveling to out of province and post your result.
I am also thinking while someone is out of province then if someone call me then if the call forwarding is going to work because the call is going to be long distance to me pm number.
Also the forwarding call from pm number to fongo number is also considered to be long distance because the fongo number I have also same area code as my pm number which is 647.
If someone confirm this thing work then it's the solutions. Thanks.

The fongo forwarding works with the advantage that you receive calls anywhere in the world as long as you have access to data (cellular or wifi). I was able to receive calls while on a trip in Costa Rica last month and the caller had no idea I was out of the country.

On my phone I have my forwarding permanently set to fongo if unreachable. What people are not sure of is: are you considered unreachable when out of province (anyone who lives close to a provincial border can test this... I will the next time i go to QC but I have a feeling the Ottawa-hull is an exception)

Earlier, it was mentioned that call forwarding could be used and call forwarded to a service such as Dell Vocie/Fongo. That process works because Fongo assigns each user a phone number and the calls are routed through internet connections.  That has the advantage of the person calling you being able to call your regular phone number or your Fongo phone number without needing to use a specialized app to make the call.

As for Hangouts, the other person who is calling you needs to be using the app as well (as already mentioned).   A couple of other free alternatives are Facebook Messenger and Viber.  The person receiving the call wouldn't have to make any adjustments to call forwarding settings when using those types of apps.

As long as you have the data plan and remain within Canada, you can use that along with the free Fongo app to receive free calls from anywhere, and to make calls for free to 1300+ cities across Canada, covering 30 major metropolitan areas and 85% of the population.  For areas not covered for free calling, you can buy add-ons.  Furthermore, any two Fongo users can call each other for free, anywhere in the world as long as they have access to data or wifi.  Fongo also has some free text capability, but that's redundant if you're in Canada with PM's global texting plan.

More info on Fongo coverage and features.

This might a bit roundabout-y, but would it be possible to set up call forwarding from your PM number to, say, a Fongo number before you go on your trip?  I've never tried this before, but it might be food for thought.

@dearmusic You cannot. Just have it strike through or edit saying wrong post.

Texting is global so can text anyone in the world.

There is no trick to get incoming calls without long-distance add-on. Just like outgoing calls, you can text them to call on alternate number.

Without a LD addon I don't think there is a way to be able to get the incoming calls.
