How unlock Samsung Galaxy S9

Fabiola2021
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

I can't make or get calls.

This phone works with my friends sim card, but it does not work with my sim card, at the same time my sim card works in others cellphones.

How can I unlock or what should I do?

Thanks

FREE PHONE?? how you got it. lol

Any chance it is a note 3?

Some 10 or so years ago Toronto's radio station CHFI had a long stretch of some kind 'lotteries'; you had to listen music, answer which song was played at such and such time, got few ballots, use them for raffle or something like that. Got a bunch of stuff... Still have few scarves and caps (winter stuff), brand new never used if somebody needs/wants them.

And it was original Note 1 i717R.

how about pay to get it unlocked.  but these days is harder to find sites for unlock service I think.   But if you are able to find one, I don't think it will be too expensive.

It is about 10 years old. CHFI was giving them away just when they were launched.

Any chance it is a note 3?  if so, try to load  LineageOS... i have mine  running like a new phone now.

I doubt it is worth to pay to unlock as it's OS cannot be upgraded, it is Big - not really handy for phone calls or to carry in the pocket.

This is one of those 'nice to have' features - to have unlocked phone. At least I rooted it long time ago. And frankly speaking I do not see any benefits of rooting unless somebody has to use some special app or dig into OS.

@Fabiola2021 Looks like your phone is locked to another carrier. To get it unlocked, you can call previous provider or contact Samsung Canada directly.

This is kind of tricky...

I have old Galaxy note, received as a present some 10 years ago from CHFI. Powering up it shows Rogers logo. Phone was never used as a 'phone' but as powerful PDA (Personal Data Assistant). I assume it is locked to Rogers...

Contacted Samsung, they cannot unlock it claiming it is international version.

Contacted Rogers, they cannot unlock it since I was never their customer nor cancelled account within last 12 months.

Any other way to unlock it for free?

@Fabiola2021

if purchased your device in canada or north america, is will be unlocked, but some Canadian carrier the do locked to them but you need to call them and by Law the have to unlocked for Free,

or your device is working with another carrier, or maybe that device has a issue you can try to do factory reset but is not mean is will be unlocked, just to clean and will be coming like a new...

SAMSUNG Galaxy S9, how to factory reset.

That's great information and brings back many memories.  In many ways, things were much simpler back with analogue phones and plain ol' GSM technology with SIM cards.  Things have gotten so complicated over the years, although some things are much easier (eg. universal USB charging except Apple, or SIM card swappability).  🙂

Technically yes, they should be all unlocked... but there are still other variables here.

For example, from what I know, at least back then, it could be a problem with the OS setting from factory.  For Samsung phones back in the days, they are all sold unlocked.  However, the programing is set to lock it to the provider of the first SIM used on the phone.

I believe this programming setting is now changed, but around 2017/2018, I am not surprise there are some phones still programmed that way.

Also, phones from overseas could still work like that.

from where you getting your device you have to contact them to unlocked for Free.

All wireless devices sold after December 1, 2017, must be unlocked or sold with instructions on how to unlock the device at no additional cost. All wireless devices that are locked to a carrier must be unlocked upon request at no cost to the consumer.

Here’s everything you need to know about Canada’s unlocking

The above suggestions should all work, but it also depends on what is going on.  It definitely sounds like there's a lock somewhere, but we haven't confirmed whether it's a Network lock, a SIM lock, or something else/similar.  Are you and your friend's SIM both on Public Mobile or on different networks?  Samsung should hopefully help with unlocking your phone regardless.  If you know the original carrier, they may be able to help unlock it as well.

@Fabiola2021   You can also call Samsung @ 1-800-726-7864, The only info you will need to provide is the IMEI and where the phone was purchased

You would need to contact your previous provider or Samsung.

If you need a PUK code from Samsung.

Samsung is giving unlock codes.   Start a live chat session from Samsung's Contact Us page:   http://www.samsung.com/ca/info/contactus.html?CID=AFL-hq-mul-0813-11000170 Inform the rep that you would like to unlock your phone and provide the IMEI & Carrier info In a few (2+) days, you will get the unlock code via email.

If they try to charge you, you should write to the CCTS. They should no longer charge you money no matter how small the unlock fee. Unlock fees are banned in Canada as of (late?) 2017.

Is your phone asking for a SIM Network Unlock PIN?  In that scenario, your phone is locked to a different carrier. You will need to contact the carrier that it is locked to receive the network unlock code.
