I am unable to text and ring to numbers back home in the U.K. My pack covers INTL texts so U.K should be included, right?
I also tried an 0800 customer line back home and I had a message saying Telus has blocked the number for security and to ring *611 from mobile for help - which also didn't work.

@darlicious that is not correct....you might be able to call an 800 # in UK....but it might not answer!! And does the 800 # thing work.....ie call an 800 # in Canada and does NOT count against your minutes on $15 plan? Would be same if you called an 800 # in UK...that is if it answered....thus may or may not need a UK add on ?? Keep in mind that the 800 # is paying for YOUR call expenses.
From Wikipedia.
These toll-free numbers can normally be called from any telephone in Canada or the U.S., though the owner (and sometimes the provider) can put restrictions on their use. Sometimes they accept calls only from either Canada or the U.S., or even only from certain states or provinces. Some are not accessible from pay phones. Calls from pay phones assess the toll-free owner an additional fee in the U.S., as mandated by the FCC. Although toll-free numbers are not accessible internationally, many phone services actually call through the U.S., and in this case the toll-free numbers become available. Examples of these services are the erstwhile MCI Worldphone international calling card and any U.S.-based Internet telephone gateway. However, many calling card services charge their own fee when their toll-free numbers are used to make calls or when their toll-free numbers are used from pay phones.

You can call toll free numbers in the UK but you do require a long distance add on for international calls ( holiday gift add ons or the $15/1000 UK min add on) to do so.

Thank you - I will check my numbers.
I had not thought about not being able to accept international texts. Worth considering - thanks again 🙂

@chelle_windsor : You certainly should have been able to text this entire time. Maybe your recipients can't _accept_ international texts.
The dialing format would be the same dialing and texting.
+44 ... no leading zeros.

I have been here just over a year but never been able to text home for some reason.
I did get the Christmas gift, so I will check the format of the numbers again and try again 🙂

Are you saying I am wrong? Please clarify.

@chelle_windsor : If you've been here a while then did you get the Xmas gifts of some data and 500 minutes of calling? That 500 minutes would have included the UK. Have you tried to call a number there?

I seem to be able to text and ring within Canada ok, I haven't noticed any issues
03-02-2022 01:13 PM
Thank you - this is helpful

Thank you for your help! I will see about updating my package to cover UK and check my contact lists to make sure I have the numbers and codes correct to text.
03-02-2022 01:12 PM
I think the 0800 number I won't be able to use from further reading but for friends and family I use +44 and drop the 0 from the mobile or area code
03-02-2022 01:10 PM
Thanks for the advice - I will check the numbers I am using are correct as mentioned above.

Lol.....no....my name is from ancestry only......I could not tell you when I have made a LD call anywhere.....and never outside of Canada or USA. And most USA calls are FaceTime.
OP said "0800 customer line", that is an area code like 1-800 in US/Canada?
I would assume so. And do keep in mind @chelle_windsor 800 numbers are set up to receive calls within the country and NOT from Canada and some are set up to receive calls from any country.
If so, does that mean that number supposed to work since it is not part of the area code on PM "not able to call area code" list?
Not really...depends how the 800 number was set up.

@chelle_windsor If you cannot call 611 something else is wrong. Does your phone service work properly except for calling/texting UK?

As @hTideGnow says.....
just to advise.....
Calls made to numbers starting with the following six digit combinations are not included in US calling from Canada and will not be completed when dialled: 712-432, 605-562, 641-552, 605-475, 605-477, 712-775, 559-726. Calls made to numbers starting with the following UK codes are not included in UK calling from Canada and will not be completed when dialled: 4470, 44870-44879, 44843-44845.

From what I see, UK has dedicated 1000 UK add-on minutes. I do not think UK is part of long distance calls
https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/bc/get-help/articles/overview-of-add-ons
but texting should work to anywhere in the world.
03-02-2022 12:03 PM
HI @chelle_windsor How you made the call? did you drop the 0 before the area code?
not sure about 0800, but according to PM: these area code cannot be called
4470, 44870-44879, 44843-44845

In the add on list there is a TOC that lists what prefix numbers are not included in the UK add on.

You should be able to text to there. be sure to use + or 011 in front of the country code and drop any leading zeros of area codes.
Calling would need the gift long distance or the UK add-ons.
You wouldn't likely be able to call a UK toll-free number.
