Wondering if I can text  and call myfamily in Canada during my trip to Dominican republic or do I need an add on?

alternative is to download free voip app like TextNow. You select a free Cdn number so others can call / text you...and you can call / text them back for free using local wifi or separately purchased data.

Alternative #2...use Whatsapp using local wifi.
