Did you mean:

Dial assist.

CountyDownIeUk

Would like to use the  +1 option for ease of calling LD no matter where I am.

Yes I know we can only call from Canada or USA.

But would like to have the best worked out contact list numbers.

i see for iPhone 8 Plus iOS 15.1 I should also have another option of DIAL ASSIST.

But not there and have read can be controlled by carrier.

So does PM offer dial assist?

I know...why would they? But why not? I might need a UK sim some day.

All my canadian and usa numbers are saved with 1 in front.

All my international numbers are saved with +countrycode.

What is Dial Assist? Dial Assist on iPhone automatically adds international and local prefixes to phone numbers, so you can make an international call without entering the country code. However, if you save international numbers with prefixes in their contacts, the Dial Assist Feature can accidentally cause problems.

How To Turn On Dial Assist, switch to turn on,is better,

Note: that turning off this option is going to modify a setting on your iPhone's Phone menu so that the phone will no longer automatically determine the correct international or local prefix when you dial. You will need to enter that information manually as you place your call.

Awhile back I had posted about making my contacts list to be usable in any city or region with a proper number to dial. While adding the 1 or +1 can be a solution from what I understand the best and easiest solution is to turn on Dial Assist.  I have also read that Dial Assist can be carrier dependent. PM cannot confirm.

So my question is:

If you have an iPhone 8 Plus and is on PM, can you turn on Dial Assist?

Got it😀😀

I don't think PM would need to do anything to actively "allow" or "disallow" Dial Assist. They just sell minutes and gigabytes, they don't configure any network-side stuff beyond their billing systems.

The best way to confirm whether or not Dial Assist actually works is to just try using it.

Yes, dialing out with PM service is going to always originate in Canada (or USA). This might make testing Dial Assist from foreign destinations impossible. But then, if you can't even produce conditions to test it then you also can't even produce conditions to ever use it, moot point. It may be impossible to "properly" configure Dial Assist through PM, though you can probably still do it with other phone providers, especially if they're "travel SIM" types.

Dial Assist - according to Apple's vague marketing hype and promises - is supposed to "intelligently" learn and adapt to your needs. So I think if the product is any good then you shouldn't need to configure anything anyhow, it's supposed to automate all that stuff for you, it's supposed to let you enter your contact information whatever convenient way you like. And if it's not any good - it doesn't work as promised - then you'll end up dialing your contacts whatever way local systems require. So either way - again, a moot point.

Right an APPLE app with no documentation. Secret.

Just as secret as AirPlay no longer works on a gen 3 Apple TV....If it was recently reset. Apple engineers working on it. Does not come up as an item that is down nor does it list as being a function that is up or down.

https://www.apple.com/ca/support/

Never the less a CSA has confirmed that PM does NOT support Dial Assist. It won’t even come up on my settings as a switch to switch, But does on my SIL’s iPhone with Bell.

This becomes a problem with leading zeroes. So add another number to that contact and use that. Still all under a contact.

Correct +1 in contacts.

@CountyDownIeUk : Don't muddy your waters with 011. That's only for CA/US (maybe other regions without looking, for the purists amongst us). But we can also use +. So just setup with +. + is used pretty much everywhere.

So Canada  and USA numbers. All numbers are ok with the prefix of +1?

And say UK. No 011 or +011.....and use +44 and the rest of the number only?  And the + some how auto adds the 011?

The website that you are quoted from is incorrect in the sense that it should say 011 for calling any country with a different country code other than Canada's (not outside of Canada itself). The United States and Carribean countries that use the country code of 1 cannot be reached if you dial 011 in front.

As for dialing the U.K., it's either (01144 and then the rest the number or +44 and then the rest of the number).  I do not believe that +011 would even work to call anywhere.

Added after: These questions are kind of the reason that I've been advising people to use + instead. When dialing from a cell phone, I believe that mentioning 011 or exit codes overcomplicates things.

Well......who would think,......only (some)  Canadians would be the ones to not know how to call Canada from another country!!!!!

To call Canada from UK you need to dial an exit code of 00 then 1 for Canada.

Would this be a correct interpretation of +1?

So from what I can see is that the +1 means

……calling from contacts list while Vancouver to Victoria….the +1 says if I need a 1 use it

.......and say calling the same number from your contacts list whilst in Victoria…..the +1 says if you don’t need the 1 don’t use it.

And setting up calls to Mexico or UK

........+011 does not like the 0.

+ and then country code is valid to call any country.

When using 011, there should not be a + in front.  It's one or the other.

@CountyDownIeUk : The system will take what it needs.

+ [country code] [area code] number

CA/US country code is 1.

Other regions may have leading zeros for country codes, area codes, numbers. When calling them from CA/US drop the leading zero. Have another number associated with the contact that includes any leading zero for when you're in that country.

You can call a local number without the 1.

You can call a local number with the 1.

You can call a local number with the +1.

No.

You should be able to add LD number including country and area codes within your contact list. So I don't see any point of using dial assist or speed dial.

Dial Assist is the answer to allow and LD number to be called from afar or while in the city of.

But PM does not support Dial Assist.

@CountyDownIeUk : SMS no. IMessage I'll leave to you the iPhone folks. Just try it. I don't recall you being on the $10 plan so the test wouldn't matter.

Does the +1 affect an outbound text or immessage?

@CountyDownIeUk : For all your numbers in your contacts.

+ country code (1 for CA/US) area code number.

Wherever you are it'll use or discard the + as needed.

Watch those area code and numbers with leading zeros. You could have trouble when in that country.

@CountyDownIeUk : Seems to be not a carrier thing. Indeed though, why not just set all your contacts to have + in front. Local calling will still work. The system will think what's this for and discard it. When next you're in Northern Ireland it'll think oh I need that.

+ for local

+ 1 or 1 for USA and Canada LD? Or just the 10 digit number with + for all USA and Canada numbers?

And what about UK and Mexico numbers?

Rarely.

Most calls from most people to most people are made by opening a contact (or a number in call history) and pressing one button.

Correct

How can "dial assist" make things easier than pressing one button?

See my previous post.

No.

It makes a significant difference to building your contacts list.

It allows to be oblivious  in regards to area code when dialling a number in your list while you are in another country.

Dial Assist automatically determines the correct international or local prefix when dialling.
