My data finish so quickly. I just put on my data for a minute today. And I just paid, I got a message saying that I have used up 75 percent and I have to be having this issue for about 3months. If it continues I will just change serve provided

  1. What is your plan?
  2. When was your renewal?
  3. Were you out of data before renewal?
  4. Is this the first time you toggled your data on since your plan renewed?

 @BKNS27 : It could though. If data has been off then a buffer gets reset back. If that back is less than 75% and then data gets turned on then the buffer could tip the counter over 75% and trigger the text from 611.

@Nkeiruer

It shouldn’t use up 75% of your data if you just turned it on for a minute.

Log into your self serve account and My Plan>View My Usage.

If any of you calls, text and data doesn’t look correct. Contact a moderator to make any corrections by clicking on the SIMon chat button and type in create a ticket for moderator.

 @Nkeiruer : "How" what? Pictures say a thousand words as the saying goes. If you don't know how to do screen caps and edit and post then that's fine.

On your self-serve page under My Data & Add-ons...what do you have listed and their numbers?

 @Nkeiruer : Did you get this 75% notice from 611 or from your phone? If you have your 4 digit PIN then dial 611 and check the data balance left. Then maybe post a screenshot of your self-serve overview page which would also show your plan and any add-ons. Blank out personal info of course.

Hello @Nkeiruer

Turning on your data for 1 minute should not use up 75% of your data, even if you are on the $15 plan (250mb)...unless...are you doing speed tests?

Two speed tests could easily take up your data allotment from this plan.

It would help to know what plan you are currently on, and if the 75% notice is coming from a Public Mobile text or a phone/device notification. As you phone can be set up to provide data warnings at certain limits.

BUT NOTE your phone is likely on a monthly schedule, where as Public Mobile are 30 day plans.

No I didn't watch anything I just turned it on for about 1 minute and they said I have used you 75% I literally did nothing

@Nkeiruer

What is your PM data plan? Are you stream movies?
I would suggest you set your phone setting to automatically connect to your home wifi.

Also to set and register your phone to the free Shaw GoWiFi and free Telus #Telus wifi when you are out.

@Nkeiruer

You need to use all of your data saving tools in your phone and turn off all background data in your phone. Most importantly turn your data saver on. There were software and security updates this week for several major phone brands and a google software update. If you did not have your phone set to only download on wifi then this likely what used up your data. There have been several of these since April this could be the issue you have with your data usage.

@Nkeiruer  It's a certainty that PM is not causing your data consumption. Review this article to understand where your data is being used: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/apps-that-use-the-most-data/

If you have an iPhone be sure Wi-Fi Assist is OFF. Otherwise you may consume cellular data even when connected to wifi.

Managing Your Data Usage

To help you manage your data usage effectively, we’ll be covering:

  1. How to track your data usage
  2. Tips and tricks to save data

Tracking Data Usage 1. Self-Serve

You can view your usage in your Self-Serve account by clicking on the Plan and Add-Ons tab, then on Data & Add-On Usage. Here, you will find a summary of your data usage for the current billing cycle. Alternatively, if you’re interested in seeing your your last 90 days worth of usage, you can select Usage History which is also under the Plans and Add-Ons tab.Don’t have a Self-Serve account yet? No worries, you can register here.

2. Data Usage Notifications

We send you a text message when you've used 75% and 95% of the data included in your plan. If you try to use something that requires data when you’ve reached your data limit, you will be directed to Self-Serve. Once signed into Self-Serve, you can review your usage and, if you’d like to continue to have access to data, you can purchase a data Add-On here too.

Tips And Tricks To Save Data 1. Autoplay

Many of the most commonly used applications like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & YouTube offer a feature called Autoplay. While using this app, the Autoplay feature will preload and play videos automatically in your “news” feed automatically as you progress through it.If you’re finding that you’re going through your data really quickly or know that you’ve almost used your entire allotted amount, setting your Autoplay to work using Wi-Fi only or disabling it may be a good option for you.

2. GPS Navigation

GPS navigation is another feature that, in fact, does require mobile data. As a substitute, you could use Google Maps, which is a free navigation application that offers the ability to navigate offline. You can also purchase other navigation applications that will allow you to navigate without using data and quickly change spending into an investment.

3. Other Applications

Other applications like video games, weather, music streaming can consume a lot of data. The good news is that most smartphones will give you the ability to restrict background data for each application that you use on a daily basis.

@Nkeiruer   did you logon to My Account and what is it showing there?

There should be a line showing how much data you have for this cycle and how much used.   Or there might be a line about the data addon you bought and how much used

in terms of usage. You can check My Account and check the usage history to see if it makes sense.

Data usage usually has nothing to do with the mobile provider but more a control of the data usage on the phone.  You might face the same thing even you change provider (of course, other provider might be able to offer a lot more data if you willing to pay a bit more)

I guess important question is:   Have you been using a lot?  like watching video (Youtube, FB autopay video, etc)?  How about games (some games download a lot when launch)?  Music streaming?

Also there might be some setting change to stop the background data use.  Like  disable Sync,  Disable backup on Mobile Data.  Disable Auto Update on Google Play/AppStore.  Disable OS update.
