Data in the USA

I was in the USA last weekend and I couldn't get my data to work. Texts and phone calls were fine.

thanks @will13am

It was perfect and to the point.  No editing needed.
Those are good info and never a canned response.  Those advise have helped countless customers.  Those are good roaming tips for OP when he makes his next US trip

Different people have different experience.  I don't see many people have trouble with Manual setting.  And in fact, quite the opposite, my suggestion to manual choosing of another networks was confirmed helpful to many.  Personally,  I also had troubles with automatic connection.  The phone connected but didn't give best performance and I needed to change for a better network.
Since the experience could be much different on different devices, no single way is the best way.   I will keep suggesting people who have trouble with automatic network selection to use manual network and try for the best connection.

And as you confirmed you have had issues with connectivity every time you have gone into US, maybe the Manual network choosing is exactly the thing you missed.  Try it next time and you will have a much smooth experience.  Of course, remember to give a bravo for great and useful tips

Again, thanks for your kind advise on this matter

that why I have bolded the part "make sure your Roaming Mobile data is enabled "

And changing network could help.  It helped me with my data issue in US last month too (Auto connected to Verizon didn't work, I have to manually change to AT&T)

Overall, I think they are good tips for OP's next US trip

A lot of people get in trouble with using manual settings over auto.  Every time that I have gone into the US, I have had issues with connectivity.  I really don't worry about which network I am on.  Anyway, all the long discussion about VoLTE seemed out of place when OP specifically mentioned that calling was fine.  It doesn't take that much effort to edit a canned response.

sound like you are back in Canada already, but hopefully the info below helps your next US trip

ritical part to US roaming depends on T-Mobile/AT&T/Verizon coverage and whether you can connect successfully onto either network.

If the phone is not connecting to T-Mobile/AT&T/Verizon, change the Network Connection from Automatic to Manual and select and test each of the three and see which one you can connect and work best

If your issue is with data, make sure your Roaming Mobile data is enabled and you have disabled your mobile data limiter.  Also change your network mode to 4G (and don't try 5G until you can connect and works on 4G)

If your issue is with voice, make sure VoLTE is enabled on the device setting.  And if it does not work, try to change the Network to T-Mobile ONLY, and change  Preferred Network Type or Network Mode to 2G and see if the calls go through.
Also, you can download VoIP app TextNow as a workaround to make calls and text if you have Wifi or if your roaming has data component and data  is working

Talk and text was working!  The issue is likely roaming data not being enabled.

@Margaret30

in cellphone settings you must enable Roaming to be able to use data in US.
