Caribbean cruise

I am going on a Caribbean cruise for Christmas and new years. Any suggestions on what i can use to have service to call my kids? Should I buy a different Sim card?

Will I also have to buy the ships wifi package? Or is GigSky used on its own instead? 
It is so much cheaper than the ship is charging for its Wifi packages!

cell service won't work on your cruise. If the ship provides wifi, you can use it to imessage kids. You can also use Whatsapp and have kids download Whatsapp and you can talk / text each other using local wifi on board.
