Android to Android Texting

When I was with Koodo, I sometimes had it where if I sent a text to another android user it would be a blue bubble where I could see if it was read etc (similar to iMessage). I read somewhere it was advanced messaging as opposed to the typical SMS. Otherwise my messages would be regular SMS and would show up as teal. However, it seems that some of the ppl I would usually have the blue bubble on are all now showing as teal when I message them. Is this just because it is Public Mobile and I don't have that option anymore, or do I need to change a setting for that? It was nice to have for work to know if a client had received my messages, etc. I know it was automatic when I was with Koodo. So just wanted to see if I could salvage that option.

Thanks guys.

You may or may not have it. Go to your messages and click the 3 dots. Settings>>advanced settings or chat features (RCS) may come up first and then advanced and go from there if you have it.

@JL9

Read the Google help on chat features it kind of explains it....from what I got out of it is both sender and recipient need it enabled. There is more flexibility in it for group messaging so that regular SMS is sort of the default for most of your contacts. There's a setting for use wifi/mobile data when available so that might default to send as SMS if you have mobile data off unless you are on wifi. There is also a send as MMS setting so I am thinking if you have that on then it will send thru the MMS server and not use your regular plan data. You would have to test and then look how it's logged in your daily usage pages....as MMS? or WEB? Anyhow that's my best interpretation of it?

Just remember that RCS services require a data or wi-fi connection to process the messaging service features.   In order for it to provide the benefits that some like about it, other users within the group need to be able to utilize the similar features.    You may find that if some don't, you may miss messages to/from that particular user.

SMS (standard text messaging) only requires an active mobile plan with texting.  When all parties have SMS-only selected, it relies only on the mobile network and not data/wi-fi services.

I have an Galaxy S9. I tweaked some of the settings so I will see if it gets the desired result. Like I said I didn't have to touch anything when I was with Koodo, it just worked that way for many Android to Android texts. In fact I wouldn't have even realized it was an option otherwise. I did some playing around and it its still a teal as opposed to blue bubble and when I sent a text it gave me a notification that it has been delivered but I don't need that, just need the iMessage type thing with read receipts etc. so I will see if this works.

Ahhh....yes chat features (RCS). I have accidentally turned this on a few times and hate it. But saying that I believe you can manage it in your settings for each contact.

Where is that 'chat' feature? On Android 8 I do not see it in any settings?

And my 'bubbles' are not in colour, just plain circle showing first initial of SMS party. And I do not use any enhanced SMS apps; just whatever came with the phone; KISS method.

I had this problem when I updated the iOS and it disable the iMessage setting. Once I enabled iMessage…everything worked fine.

Blue bubble for my replies to an iPhone and green bauble replies from Androids.

I use the delivered notification to tell me it got there. But that doesn't say that it was seen.

@JL9

RCS services are device based option and not a mobile provider option.

They can be handy when all users utilize it but if only some do, you may have delays or issues sending and receiving them.

Awesome guys, thanks for the help so quickly will take a look at that and see if I can switch it back to the way I want.

I will check that. I know I didn't manually change anything when I left Public Mobile the first time to Koodo and I just came across this feature by chance and didn't realize it was an option, but it was a handy one to have available. I just assumed it would be the same with PM, but I will see if tweaking the chat features will get that back on, otherwise it may not be available for PM?

Definitely "chat" features.   (which is analogous to Apple's iMessage service)

Attached is a good article on these RCS services, which stands for Rich Communication Services:

@JL9  note, you will need DATA on to receive/send messages when outside of wifi areas for this setting.

@JL9  are you talking about Chat Features?

Turn chat features on or off
  1. On your device, open Messages .
  2. At the top right, tap More. Settings.
  3. Tap Chat features.
  4. Toggle "Enable chat features" on or off.
