The 3G network standing for third generation, marked a significant evolution in mobile telecommunications technology, introducing the capability to transmit voice data and non-voice data, such as downloading information from the internet and sending emails, at much higher speeds than its predecessor, 2G. Launched in the early 2000s, 3G networks enabled mobile phones and other devices to access a variety of media-rich internet services, effectively laying the groundwork for the modern smartphone experience. This technology supported video calling, mobile internet access, and the ability to stream video and music, drastically changing the way people communicate and consume media. The advent of 3G network was pivotal in driving the widespread adoption of mobile internet, thereby contributing to the global connectivity and the digital lifestyle that is commonplace today.

@casaraku : AT&T in the states has already shut off their 3G. T-Mobile in July. Canada later 2025. We shall see. If your phone can do VoLTE then at least you're half way there. My phone can, by specs, but it's not provisioned so I can't even toggle it for fun.
As for roaming in the states...I don't think anyone here knows. Someone is asserting from nothing that it will work. But no one has verified it yet.

To clarify depending on your network settings in your device determines the network you must with pm. It's only voice calls that require the 3G network to work with public mobile. If your phone is set go autoconnect then it will choose the 4G LTE network for data (throttled to 3mbps) and for messaging (SMS/MMS). If you set your phone to 3G only then all 3 of your services will use that network. You will find that your data speeds can reach up to 20+mbps depending on network traffic and you have higher latency. On average though the data speed will be about 12mbps.
There has been speculation for almost a year now to when pm (ultimately telus) will enable voLTE calling for pm customers with the best guesstimate at the time was within 2 years or this time next year but with no current effort to enable this feature for pm customers using US roaming add ons with the imminent shutdown of their 3G network we may be waiting quite awhile longer than that.

@dstan634 We are all customers like you, so technically, we don't have a firm answer
BUT.. if they don't make voice available on 4G (VoLTE), that would mean Telus would have to kill PM and move us to Koodo or Telus (or hand us over to Rogers/Bell 🙂 )
Based on the fact that Telus just introduced new Rewards program with PM with a new webiste, updated Community site just last month, it looks like Telus is not ready to give up on PM. So, we suspect that they would open up VoLTE for PM (someone suspected as early as later this year) and PM will stay 🎉
(BTW, your data is already running on 4G/LTE , just not the voice)

@dstan634 No one knows and PM has not realeasd any information. Mind you 3g in Canada is expected to be shutdown December 2025. So a few years left. The USA is expected this year 2022 and PM has at this point not mentioned anything about how USA roaming add-ons will function.
Due note PM is 4g already just throttled to 3g for data. It's calls that currently run on 3g network.
