@Peanut1 Why not get one of the Unlimited plans at one of the Big Three? They have bigger data caps like 30 GB for $80.... And when you go over, it slows down to 512 Kbps, good enough for web browsing.

@Peanut1

If you can reign in your data usage and you want to stick with pm activating a new SIM card could be a good deal for yourself especially if your current account was activated with a new number. This post will give you an idea of the savings you can enjoy depending on upcoming promos the  best savings currently is 40% of the $50 plan with a free SIM card......

https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Retail/CCS-latest-pm-marketing/m-p/698797/highlight/t...

If you plan for those savings in the future and activate a SIM today or tomorrow for your immediate needs you can acquire a free sim card from other pm users on places like craigslist or Facebook in exchange for using their code unless you have an extra sim card or live in Toronto get a $4.99 SIM card from CCS. For the sake of argument lets say you acquire a free sim card here is how you save by activating rather than renewing early.

Early renewal : $70/15.5gb - $10/30 day plan=$60 ÷15gb=$4/gb+500mb autopay bonus

Change plan  : $50/10.5gb - $10/30 day plan=$40 ÷ 10gb=$4/gb+500mb autopay bonus

Activate SIM : $70/17.5gb*- $10/30 day plan=$60÷17gb=$3.52/gb+500mb bonus+$10 credit☆

Activate SIM : $50/12.5gb*- $10/30 day plan=$40÷12gb=$3.33/gb+500mb bonus+$10 credit♡

* includes 2GBBONUS promo code 2gb bonus monthly plan data (must keep your rate plan)

w/$10 credit factored in ☆$2.94/gb ♡$2.50/gb

Suspend your other account and keep one of these two plans. If you run out of data (mid month?) unsuspend and reactivate the other account and use as a WiFi hotspot . Keep other account active or suspend and activate if needed or if 88/89 days has passed to avoid account cancellation.

Or you can let your original account cancel and activate on free month credit promos stacked with CCS discounted activation bundles w/free sim card and refer yourself for the extra $1 reward.😃

Learn how to minimize your data wastage...

Spoiler

Here is some more tips on data usage that can help you conserve data usage and/or find where high data usage is coming from.....

  1. Turn your data saver on.*
  2. Set your data tracker to the correct calendar dates of your 30 day cycle.
  3. Set your data warning. ( I set mine to 25% of plan data**.)
  4. Set your data limiter. (I set mine to 50%.**)
  5. Turn off all background data in your app usage settings.***
  6. Set video content to play on wifi only ( or off altogether) in each individual app's settings.
  7. Turn off wifi assist for iPhone or the Android equivalent.
  8. For low data plans turn off mobile data and turn on when needed or to download MMS.
  9. Use free wifi when available.
  10. Double check that your phone is connected to wifi. Your phone can sometimes not automatically reconnect to wifi after rebooting, resetting or leaving/entering a wifi area.

*Android and iPhone's data saver tools work differently it is prudent to check settings in each phone's apps for such things as your photo app for device syncing, backing up etc.... Note: viewing or searching for backed up/stored photos can use considerable mobile data.

**Public Mobile sends out a text from 611 giving a warning at 75% and 95% of total data usage. If you have data add ons these warnings include both plan data and add on data.

**So if you just have 1gb of plan data you will get a warning at 756mb/1024mb and 973mb/1024mb. However if you have 1gb of plan data and a 5gb data add on (1024mb+5120mb=6144mb) these warnings will recieved at 4608mb/6144mb and 5837mb/6144mb respectively.

**This is why setting your data warning and limiter is important so that an errant app's sudden usage can be noticed and/or stopped by your phone's data usage tools rather than relying on pm's limited warnings system.

***Background data can use up to 38% of your data that is pure wastage.

Get in the habit of taking screenshots of your overview page and payment history before and after renewal for record keeping and checking that your data and/or limited minute/text counter resets.

At that rate of data you may want to look into a turbo hub from Telus. I know it’s not PM but 15gb is a large pool in a small time period.

many of my friends who are northern camp workers use upwards of 60-100gb a month and my wife uses 25-50gb so I know it is possible think Instagram and constant Netflix plus corporate server hotspot.

you may need to top up constantly and if you feel you meet a point where you got 100$ or more into the sim a month look into a peace of mind plan or something along those lines 🙂

@Peanut1 if you keep using Hotspot without better management,  no plan from any carrier will suit your needs or you are just burning money.

Make sure all devices connecting to your Hotspot set it up as Metered network..this will avoid them from big downloads like OS update or app update..

^^^ This or refrain from using mobile data for hotspot application.  My home internet usage is in the TB range, 1000x that of mobile.

@Peanut1 : I would suggest you ask the CSA's to do an early renewal since you seem to like that much data. Or change down to a smaller bucket of data and see if you can get by with that.

Doing immediate plan changes will forfeit what you have and start a new 30 day term. No pro-rating or refunds here.
