Group messaging on iPhone

Hey guys! So my friends and I from time to time send group texts. (Non iMessage, standard sms) I’ve noticed it requires a data connection (at least to receive them). Do group texts use data? (Running iPhone 6, iOS 11.1.1) PS been with PM a couple weeks now and I love it!

Data needs to be enabled to send group text messages.  Group text not sent via iMessage is treated as MMS which requires data on.  These messages do not count towards data usage and can be sent even on accounts that do not have data.  This is an Apple thing and has nothing to do with carrier network.
