you are essentially correct. while the phone was correctly unlocked (including the imei# reference) it did need to be reset and activated using itunes etc. thanks.

the sim card is fine, the iphone was correctly  unlocked (including the imei #) but i needed to enter my brothers apple id and password to then change it to my apple id and password to allow the use of my sim card. all is well now. thank you.

@patriciaandpier You have stated that that the previous carrier unlocked the phone, but has another carrier's sim card ever been tried in it? Carriers do sometimes give incorrect information about this and since iPhone unlocking is done entirely in a remote manner, you wouldn't know if they did it or not.

Also, I believe that iPhones of this generation (iPhone 4) require a factory restore before unlocking takes effect, so before sure to first back up any user content. It must also be "activated" by loading iTunes on a seperate computer system with the phone connected using a USB cable.

@patriciaandpier  Unfortunately that phone is still locked so it would be worthwhile to call FIDO again give them the IMEI number and ask them to unlock it.

@patriciaandpier  try these 2 things in order.

  1. sync to iTunes
    1. Insert new working SIM - do not turn phone on (if SIM is already in, turn off)
    2. Connect to computer with USB cable.
    3. Start iTunes if it doesn't auto run
    4. iPhone will switch on. Wait until iTunes registers it and checks for updates
    5. Install the carrier profile update (if offered, if not, go to step 6)
    6. Disconnect and restart. From @luddite.
  2. Reset your network settings. iPhone preferences, navigate to "General," and then scroll down to the bottom where it says "Reset." Tap that, and then tap "Reset Network Settings. Once done, your phone should restart. If it didn't, restart it. If it worked, re-enter your wifi password if applicable,  Enable data,  sms amd mms to semd and receive from Android phones.

Welcome to PM.  Stay safe.

@patriciaandpier

Was your sim card working in the previous phone?

Thanks

Was the phone used with another provider ?  If it was then it would need to be unlocked.

I think you will need to unlock the phone

Ask your brother to talk to apple

@patriciaandpier Can you try to use SIM in another phone to check whether the problem is with the phone and not with SIM? Thanks.
