What kind of phone do you have?
If you use an iPhone you go into your settings, go to cellular, then click network selection, you press to turn off automatic and then it will show you all the available carriers and you can press on T-Mobile.
If you are on Android there are a few different ways depending on the type of phone.
On Samsung phones you go into your settings, then to connections, then select mobile networks, tap the automatic toggle to turn it off, then it will show you the networks and you can connect to T-Mobile.
On a google pixel you go to your settings, then networks and internet, then tap your SIM, then go to Network, here you can turn off automatic and select T-Mobile.
If you have a different android phone please let me know and I’d be happy to post the specific steps for that device.

Android: Settings->Connections>Mobile Networks>Select automatically off, then it will show you a list of carriers, pick T-Mobile or AT&T

How do I manually connect to TMovile?

Chances are unless you have a recent new fangled smartphone or relatively new iPhone your phone does not support VoLTE ( voice over LTE/4G). That means you need to manually connect to T-Mobile and to begin with make sure the network preference is set to autoconnect (2G/3G/4G LTE).
if you give us your approximate location in the US and destination and the make and model of your phone we can help by telling you your likelihood of connecting to the 2G network for voice services.

You’ll have to manually connect to T-Mobile if AT&T isn’t working or vice versa, reboot your device between setting changes. You can check here to see if your phone is supported for VoLTE:

If your phone isn’t supported you’ll have to manually connect to T-Mobile and put your voice and data settings on 2G GSM. T-Mobile is the only carrier in the US that you can use if your phone isn’t VoLTE enabled.
