@Carlo1946 , you don't press # 1.  Just long press 1.  Alternatively, call yourself.

Somebody did call otherwise why would the red button by voicemail be on??

No have been with them for over a year ! When I press # and 1 pm tells me wrong number and the message I get on my phone is: Error performing request - unknown error and at the bottom of the phone in a grey box it says DISMISS

Try calling your voice mail from another phone. Access number should be in your phone ending with 4001/2.

Did you set up your voice mail at all? It has to be set up using your mobile phone very first time and then can be accessed and maintained from any phone.

were you trying to access via your phone?

Try to call from a landline, call yourself, then click # and see if you can access your VM there

If you can, it would be just the VM key setup on your phone
