keep existing plan but temporarily move number to another phone plan for upcoming trip...

I'm heading to Mexico in late March and was disappointed to learn that I won't be able to use my phone while there.  I need to be able to both receive and to make calls during the week I will be in Mexico.  Trying to figure out a solution.  I'd like to remain a customer of Public Mobile.   Wondering if there is a way to set up an account with another company that allows for calling while in Mexico (such as Virgin, Bell, Rogers or Telus) on a month to month basis after which I would cancel and go back to just using my existing Public mobile plan.  The "tricky" part is that to do this, I would need to move my phone # over to this new company and not sure how to do that without being required to close my existing PM plan account?  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thx

I think I will just get a suitable plan with another company/carrier that can be used while in Mexico and with a new #, and then set up to have calls to my current/exisitng # forwarded to that other new phone # while I'm away...and then upon my return I can just cancel that other (non Public Mobile) account- so will have 2 phone bills for a month or two... 🙂

Thanks

Yes. What you COULD do if you really wanted to, as it seems this may be a business write off for you. You can contact Telus and just got one month of a Can/US/Mexico plan using a secondary phone. Then you can call forward your number to the temporary plan. Then when you get back, just cancel the temp plan and turn off call forwarding on PM. Sounds easy enough.

thx...I actually have another phone I could use...so wondering if I just kept my existing plan and phone # with Public Mobile...and as you mentioned, figure out how to have calls made to it forwarded to this other phone with another carrier that I set up for while I'm away...is there any info about how to have calls forwarded?

@rogercarlson

What I would suggest is to download the TextNow app and get a secondary number then call forward your PM to the TextNow number or purchase a local SIM and call forward PM to the local SIM number.

Does Public Mobile allow for calls to be forwarded to another #?

@rogercarlson

porting to a different network will definitely permanently deactivate your PM account right away. You'd need a new sim to start a new account when you return...but you can port your number back to PM if you start a new account. Could it be possible to just come to Mx and tell your contacts you'll return next week ?

thx for the idea, but I need for my clients to be able to contact me on my existing phone # that they are familar with....as trying to notify of a new # to use is likely too confusing at this point...

Just for one week.  But I need to be accessbile at my current phone # while I'm away as trying to notify people to contact me at an entirely different # would be too difficult to do I think...was hoping to move my existing # to another provider but keep my public mobile in the interim (and keep paying for it would be fine)...but would need to port my current # to new company without closing my PM account (could they assign me a different # for while I'm away and then I would want to change back when I'm back home).

@rogercarlson

have you considered using free voip app such as TextNow while in Mx ? You get a free Cdn number, you can call / text for free all while using your local wifi or separately purchased data. Depending on how long you'll be in Mx, you can just susupend your PM until you return.

added...Whatsapp might be a short term solution as well. It uses local wifi or separately purchased data.

How long are you going to Mexico for? You can always just change your plan to a $15 while you're away to keep your number. Or if you don't care, you can just port out to something like TextNow which works in Mexico and just purchase a data plan.
