Yes @DAnne1 Switch it to SMS and it's free! Just know that iMessages use very little data though.

Just to be sure, if I click on 'send as SMS'
on my iPhone, it states carrier messaging rates may apply. So I imagine that means it passes as PM regular messages, no charge?

SMS and calling are completely different from data.
Even when one has exhausted their data, they can still utilize MMS (i.e. picture messaging) and RCS (i.e. Apple iMessage and Android chat) by using Wi-Fi.

Of course. However if you have the iPhone then iMessage needs data. Therefore go into your settings and change to SMS instead so it still works.
