@gojo If you have a lot of pictures and music stored on phone then yes it can take awhile almost 2 days in background but it should have asked you by now for wifi password and unlock code you used on old phone by now .. assuming this is a iphone
should be able to call out on it and text on it while it continues to down load emails old texts and what not

I always turn things off before changing electrical things. That sim is like a piece of circuitry. I know some people hot-swap sims but I just cringe.

I'm pretty sure I didn't create another account. So now it says it is transferring data - so i just wait to get a message of transfer complete and then continue with prompts, correct?

You don't need a transfer, you don't need a port, you don't need a sim swap...as mentioned, just pull out the sim from the old phone and put it in the new one. There may be a size issue. If you need the smaller one then the sim can be carefully snapped out of the larger frame.

Oh so this is an already activated port the number in deal. Did you try it on a non-mobile browser?
The number is currently on a Telus account? (could be suspended, but not dead)

@gojo Additional info on porting number
When transferring (porting) your number to any new carrier it’s important to remember to leave the old providers SIM card in the phone until you receive the confirmation text from old carrier @that point you have 90 mins to reply YES to the confirmation text … also when going thru this process the new provider will want you old providers account number and will ask for IMEI number disregard this (IMEI) number as it has a tendency to just cos porting hiccups .. so if your ready to port to pm and already activated a SIM card you can go to your self serve serve profile tab and change /transfer (port) number this can also be done on activation but it’s advised to pick a temp number first then port
