Will 5g plan work with 4g tower?

If i get a 5g data plan will it work when I visit a rural area that has only a  4g tower?  

Or will a 4g data plan work better if there is only a 4g tower in the area?

I would suggest giving advice to run this app. Speed Test app is more for fun than anything else  I've used up more than 1GB in single test (I did it deliberately because I was near the end of my billing cycle), it could actually be harmful to give advice such as this.

Yes, my son’s phone is not 5G capable and he is on the 5G plan.  His phone is set to LTE and he does get a little more speed than he would on a 4G plan.  When we signed up, it was the better priced plan for him.
