What happens to my previous carrier once I port my number to Public Mobile?

Hello,

I'm brand new to Public Mobile, please bear with me. Smiley Happy

So, I activated my account last night and it looks like I've successfully ported my number. On my phone, where it used to show my previous carrier, it now shows TELUS which I suppose is the network PM uses. Because this is one of the very few times I've ported my number through, I'm still wondering what happens to my previous carrier?

I'd like to go with PM for sure, but surely I wouldn't want to be charged by both carriers at the same time! So, what happens, and do I need to do anything else?

Thanks

@Tammy3 The way I understand it, if you have ported over your same phone number to PM, and received a confirmation SMS from PM (while using the PM SIM card), then your previous carrier is simply dropped off.

I would imagine that being the case, since the same phone number cannot simultaneously be used by more than one carrier. But in any case, do keep an eye on your credit card statements. There could be a chance that something didn't register (through no fault of your own) and you get charged by both carriers; in that case, I would then call the previous carrier and make sure it is cancelled.

P.S. The confirmation SMS could come from a weird phone number. I've enclosed a screencap of the SMS in case you may find it useful.

@Tammy3 you shouldn't need to if the port completed successfully.  Did you get the text from Public Mobile that the port had completed successfully?

I'm a fairly new memeber as well.  So since my # ported and I'm using everything from PM. I don't need to go to Freedom and close my account?

@srlawren , same process I use!

I just left that one open too long before I came back.

@srlawren , I read the thread before I even thought of simply responding as I looked at the forum listing 30 minutes ago, before getting to this post.

@stonechucker my "problem" is my process.  I open up all bolded (meaning there are new posts) areas (Discussions, Phones & Hardware, etc) of interest into new tabs, then I go through each of those tabs and open up any bolded (again, new replies) threads of interest into new tabs, and then I make my way through those. But sometimes it can take me a few mins to get through the tabs or I get interrupted by something else, and then I come back.  I usually try to remember to refresh before actually responding but sometimes fail to do so, and occasionally get burned.  There were like a half dozen new responses between when I had opened a tab for this thread and when I clicked Post, and a lot had happened during that time.  Live and learn!

@smileydoll, don't worry about the phone saying Telus.  Some phones don't seem to be able to show Public Mobile.  Telus owns Public Mobile, so you're definitely on the right network, and the greatest benefit is Bell shares the network also, Nation Wide.

I think you're going to fall in love with your service here, over Chatr.

Welcome to Public Mobile!

@geopublic Thanks again! Wow, my questions are answered in real time!

Yeah, I used to see "chatr" in the carrier name shown on my phone, but after inserting the PM SIM card it shows "TELUS" so I came to believe that PM operates under the Telus network.

I could try my chatr SIM card later to see if it works or not. Meanwhile I'll have to wait for the confirmation SMS from PM.

@geopublicThank you for your quick reply. Just to clarify, I used to be with chatr and have since switched to PM. It's interesting because I was still able to access my chatr account and see my registration details, so I was wondering what it was about.

On porting my number, I suppose it's complete because I can use my same number under PM now, though I didn't get any confirmation emails etc. Do you know if the porting happens immediately, or do I have to wait a few business days for the changes to fully take effect?

Thanks again!

Once the port is 100% complete you will get a text from PM. The easiest way to check if the port is complete is to put back your Telus SIM and if still works it means that the port is not done. Just continue to use your phone with the Telus SIM until it stops working. When it stops just put back your PM and then you should be good to go.

Once the port is complete your Telus account automatically closes and you do not have to do anything else. Telus will credit any funds that were in your account that you are entitled to get back if you were on a post paid plan.
