I would recommend against using the general term "fill in your area code" because there isn't voicemail access numbers in every area code, and just reference the Updated list of Voicemail Access Numbers. For example, according to that list, there is no voicemail access number with the following area codes, though certainly ones in area codes that overlay their areas:

236 249 250 343 365 367 416 418 431 437 474 514 519 548 579 604 639 672 709 742 780 782 807 825 873 905

@WallyDee

Have you set up voicemail but just can't access it by long pressing "1"? You most likely need to add your voicemail number as suggested by @esjliv . Refer to @Nezgar 's list for your local voicemail number and be sure to add it with +1 (000) 580 4001 (fill in your area code).

Is the method of resetting the voicemail password in the self-serve and then using a different phone to do initial setup still a thing. So as not to use limited minutes. Otherwise of course with unlimited it wouldn't matter.

@WallyDee

Are you just hitting and holding the "1" on your phone dialer?

That feature should work.

Try rebooting or a reset of network settings.

You can also try calling your Voicemail Access number directly and see if that is any different.

Here is a list of the Access numbers, as posted by @Nezgar

Find which one is your area and add it as your voicemail contact on your phone:

If you haven't set up voice mail here's how to do it courtesy of @Jb456 :

After you’ve activated, your voicemail is automatically ready to accept messages as soon as you add it to your account. It will play a default greeting until you set it up. Setting it up isn’t complicated:

  1. Hold down the ‘1’ key on your phone keypad to dial your voicemail access number. Calling your own 10-digit phone number will also bring you to your voicemail.
  2. When prompted, enter a password between 4 to 15 digits long. Try to make it hard to guess, but easy to remember. It will be more secure if you avoid using numbers that are repetitive or sequential such as ‘1111’ or ‘1234’.
  3. Choose whether you want to bypass your password when calling from your own phone.
  4. Record your name, and a personalized greeting.
  5. When you’re done, hang up to end the call.

How do you try to access your voicemail?
From mobile phone or from other phone calling voicemail number and entering PIN?

Did you set up PM voicemail at all? It has to be set up from your mobile phone not from other phone.
