i only have the $18 Canada plan, will I receive SMS when I am in US if I do not buy any roaming add-on? 

I will have hotel wifi, any way I can make calls back to Canada?

No you don’t need a SIM then if you don’t go to the USA but TextNow will work on other countries when connected to wifi.

Apparently, I got a message from TextNow recently that you can only use their service when connected to any WiFi in Canada and you can keep use the secondary number you selected.

This is funny that TextNow is a Canadian VoIP company but with all the restrictions in Canada from the big 3. They are making things difficult for TextNow to operate in Canada. So sad!

The TextNow SIM or eSIM can only be used when you are in the USA for free calling, texting and essential data when connected to T-Mobile network.

I haven’t been to the USA to test since all the border restrictions since Trump got into office.

TextNow is a free app on the phone.  You can set it up and test it out before your trip.  TextNow gives you another 10 digits phone number and you can use the app to call and receive on that phone number (so you can give it to your friend as a secondary number)

i don't think you need the sim card for textnow, probably just good for US anyway.  But @BKNS27  might be able to advise more with TextNow sim card or esim

The TextNow App is a free communication tool that provides a dedicated phone number for unlimited calling and texting. It operates over Wi-Fi or via a eSIM/SIM card on supported mobile networks.  You will be assigned a different phone  number.  Some customers have forwarded their PM number to their Textnow number while traveling. You could purchase a travel eSIM card while traveling in USA for data usage if you don't have access to free Wifi.

I have WhatsApp .  But, can you tell me more about TextNow.  I see it has option to get a sim card.

You will be able to receive SMS texts while traveling in the USA (without any roaming package).  

However, you will not be able to make phone calls or receive phone calls.  You could purchase a US roaming add on for calls. 

You could use other apps like WhatsApp or Textnow app to call back to Canada.
