US data

Chair4trees

Hello, I have a basic package which includes 10G of data per month. I'm making a short trip to the US and doing the 15 day add-on for text and calls only. Do I understand correctly that if I have need of data down there it comes off my 10G "pool" without incurring charges? I rarely use even close to my capacity any given month and doubt my trip will be any different. Thank you!

@Chair4trees Okay that's good, that means you don't need to purchase any additional add-on. Your plan gives you data, calling, and texting in the US (and Mexico) for no additional fee. Just ensure to turn data roaming on (in your phone settings) and leave your network selection set to automatic.

Hi DennyCrane, here's pertinent text from my plan. I guess my initial inquiry and confusion is based on what's stated in the first bullet.
• 10GB of data for use within Canada, US & Mexico at 5G speed up to Mbps.
• Unlimited Canada, US & Mexico minutes and messaging...

Thanks, I will save this info for when I head down! Awesome community here, very helpful.

I won't repeat the answers that have already been explained, but I would ask what the details of your plan are? If you have a plan that is a "Canada/US" plan, then you don't need any add-on at all. Many plans now include US roaming.

@Chair4trees have you turn on your mobile roaming data yet?

What network you see it connected to?? Or  can you manually connect to T-Mobile or Verizon or AT&T?

Some help with that would be great, thanks again.

No problem.

Settings, Mobile Data, Mobile Networks, move toggle to the left. Then you'll see T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. Pick T-Mobile and then reboot. Moving forward, just leave it turned off and every time you enter the US, your iPhone will remember this and you won't have to do anything.

If you purchase data as well, this is how to turn on data roaming.

Settings, Mobile Data, Mobile Data Options (roaming off), turn it on. Easy as that.

Thank you all. I have an older phone, iPhone Xs Max.

Oh then you'll have zero problems. Do you know how to turn off automatic in the settings and turn on data roaming? Let me know, if you don't, I'll show you how. It's super easy.

Hello @Chair4trees

If you purchase a US 15 Day addon Text and Talk only, you will not be able to use your data. If you wish to have data for stuff like maps and such, you may wish to consider adding the Talk Text and Data addon. FYI, if you use an iPhone, you will need data to send messages unless you go into your settings and change it to "send as text".

Side notes. When you are in the US, go into your Settings, Network Settings and turn off automatic. Let the list come up and usually T-Mobile works the best. Click on that and reboot your phone. IF you are going to add data to your addon, then turn on data roaming as well.

And finally, we should ask which phone you are going down with as some phones may not work down there even with an addon.

No, if you need data you'll have to purchase data. Your pool is only for usage in Canada.  Outside of Canada,  you need a package  which includes roaming.

But no, you will not be charged anything extra. The service will just not work.

Most important,  to make and receive calls, you need to have a VoLTE enabled phone that is on Public Mobile's white-list.
