Text forwarding while in UK

I'm going to travel to the UK, get a local SIM there and use a text forwarding app.

My questions is, can my public mobile SIM stay in the phone I take with me to the UK (it has a 2 SIM tray) or does my public mobile SIM have to stay in a phone in Canada?

Follow up, if the SIM has to stay in a phone in Canada does that phone have to be turned on?

Thanks in advance.

@jtd  if you decide to use text forwarding app, your phone has to stay in Canada and connecting to PM network for it to receive text and then forward.

I understand you want to buy your current phone with you to UK.  A workaround, do you have a 2nd phone?  a phone that you can put your PM SIM in and then install the forwarding app?  If so, just do it.  Any simple phone able to install the forwarding app you chose would be good.  Just make sure it plugged in and power up all the time.  Best to to leave it with a friend so you can ask them to power-cycle it if needed.

The SIM would have to stay in Canada connected to the PM network.  I would think that the phone has to stay powered on for you to receive  texts as there isn't a message storage area (like a voicemail if someone calls when your phone is off).

I just texted myself from my work phone to my personal phone with it turned off and there is no record of the message when I turned my phone back on

Edited to Add:  I did receive the test text after a few minutes but you would need the phone powered on to receive the text as it wouldn't forward it when not connected to the network.

@jtd : Forwarding from a PM account must have the SIM in a phone and on and have a text forwarding app or capability turned on all in Canada.

Looks like that you need to keep the SIM card in a phone in Canada plugged in.
