Good Afternoon,
In the event that someone loses their phone, is there a way to retrieve text messages from that number?

To my understanding, SMS is stored on your device. You lose your phone, you lose your SMS send before.
There are handy Android apps to back up your SMS on regular basis if you care to keep track of all received.

@AJ2020 not from Public Mobile.
But your phone might have setup some backup to iCloud or Google. So, that could be your life saver.

Only if you've had a forwarding scheme setup prior to losing the device.
Other than that, the SMS is delivered to the device with the associated SIM card attached.
What you CAN do is search your "View My Usage" option under the associated self-serve account to see what number(s) may have texted you - at least this way, you'll know who is trying to reach you via text.
