I know that's not a good first impression. Sites do sometimes crash. I would try again in a few hours or in the morning. There are other times when sites undergo overnight maintenance, so late at night error messages such as that could be more common.
Depending on your time zone, it might actually be a good idea to wait until midnight to complete your activation. If you do it now and it's still before midnight, you'll be a charged for a full day's service for the remainder of the calender day.
