I don't think you can revert backwards on an OS update.  If you could, then Asus did a bad job.  Rolling back updates is the oldest trick in the book to exploit security holes.  I find it hard to believe that an OS update can make a phone lose compatibility with a cell network.  Failing to install and bootlooping is one thing, but completing the update and then breaking the phone seems really odd.

At this point, I suggest giving lineage OS a try.  There is nothing to lose  If the zenfone in question is model X00TD, then there is official lineage support.  Version 15.1 is android 8.1.

This is one version. I'm not endorsing it or anything. Heck I don't even have an Android phone. It looks pretty complicated. Sorta like LineageOS maybe.

Maybe only a little more complicated than that redflagdeals link instructions.

How'd it go with the lost/stolen?

About LineageOS...it might be that your phone isn't compatible.

Right. It's a known 8.1 problem.

Just for giggles:

Try the lost/stolen feature.
Log in to self-serve. Plan & Add-Ons from top menu. Lost/Stolen Phone from next menu. Suspend Service button. Log out. Wait a few minutes. Log back in and back to Lost/Stolen Phone and Resume Service this time. Log out. Restart phone.
See what happens.

what does that software do anyways?

The redflagdeals solution that RobertQc also linked to was the other more technical possibility.

But again, have you restarted the phone? Maybe also the lost/stolen trick might fix those bars.

ok thanks i was wanting to go back to android 7 but they said i can't when i contacted asus tech

@farmerjosh3You can, most definitly downgrade. (By doing a clean and fresh install of a v7 rom)

I would however, if it was me- install LineageOS instead.  I refuse to buy a phone that does not support LineageOS.

If you have some free time and feel up to it, do it here https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/X00TD or https://forum.xda-developers.com/asus-zenfone-max/development/llineage-os-8-0-asus-zenfone-max-z010d...

Make sure to confirm your exact model and to follow the instructions to a T.

Have you rebooted the phone?

Does voice work? Text? Data? Any? Some? Account active? Suspended?

Yes this a known issue for data things but one possible work around is to insert another SIM and set up the APN.

There is another possible rather more technical solution as well.

@farmerjosh3This is common, if you don't feel like putting lineageOS on your max, or downgrading back to 7, read this https://forums.redflagdeals.com/solved-fido-apn-miui-10-cant-add-apn-2239645/#p30122708

@farmerjosh3 This is not public mobile, this is a problem that can happen across all carriers with 8.1
