@melissajoseph it sounds like you have an iPhone. SOS may appear if you don't have a cell signal but iPhone still allows emergency calls. Are you in a building that's blocking celluar signals?

First, login to My Account using Incognito mode to confirm your account status is Active
Try to reboot the phone
Try to reseat the sim card (Power down the phone, take sim card out for a minute, then put it back in and power up)
Try changing the preferred network type to 3G Only
Try the PM sim in another phone if possible
and try to use the phone in another area
Try to use it on another phone

Although you probably already tried, service can sometimes be restored with a restart of the device. That can speed up to the reconnection to the network in the case the network did was down momentarily.
