Samsung Galaxy A12 compatibility isses.

I recently switched over to Public Mobile. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy A12 Nacho, and I'm on the $15/month 3G plan. Both my data and my texts (sending and receiving) work fine, but I cannot send calls, receive calls, or access my voicemail. I did some research and believe it's because the specs of my phone are only compatible with one of the 3G frequencies Public Mobile uses.

Is it worth trying to use a 4G plan on Public Mobile (where my phone is compatible with 2 of the 6-ish frequencies), or should I give up and look for a different carrier?

How long ago did you buy it? I would return it to them saying wth is this?

Adding - I don't know. I keep looking around and there does seem to be conflicting information out there. The fact that it's not working for you though is certainly one indication.

@computergeek541 I guess I just accidently bought a phone not intended for Canada. I'm not the most technologically savvy person, so I'm not surprised it happened, haha.

@softech okay. I think I'll try looking at other carriers, like Koodo, to see if those will be more compatible

@softech , my phone is dual SIM. I bought it from Samsung's online store.

In my settings the details are as follows:

Product Name: Galaxy A12

Model Number: SM-A127F/DS

Serial Number: R58RC2TA8FL

Sasmung Canada doesn't sell dual SIM card devices.  I'm very surprised about these details.  Not being a model intended for sale in Canada, there would be no warranty with Samsung Canada.

@computergeek541 something not right.

OP got the model from the phone, so, model should be the correct info

But that model is not a Canadian model.  Dial Sim,

I don't know why Samsung Canada is selling such a device for this market.

They wouldn't be selling it.  This really doesn't make any sense.

@zauggsarah if yours a dual sim one, it is not a Canadian model.  The model Samsung Canada sold should be SM-A125W

Yes, that is the Canadian website. This means that compatibility isn't the issue.

@gpixel I did, with no luck. Still cannot send calls, receive calls, or access voicemail.

@zauggsarah

hi I think your device is a dual sim phone. please try using the other sim slot and see if that works

From what I can find, only the SM-A125M (and /DS) would be compatible. More useful LTE as well.

@computergeek541- 2G would be a different protocol. The customer mentioned Nacho. So that's what we have to go on. According to gsmarena and as softech found it only has the one 3G and even looks rather light in the needed LTE.

I think the real question is which geographical branch of Samsung it was purcahsed from. The OP mentioned purcahasing it directly from Samsung.  If it was Samsung Canada, it wouldn't be the Nacho variant that lacks band 2 for 3g.

@softech wrote:

Yes a12 nacho is a different phone from a12 sold in Canada.  Wonder if OP meant he got it from Samsung Canada or not

@zauggsarah is your phone dual sim ?  I think A12 dual is

Go to Settings, About and chexk the exact model number from there

The customer did say that the phone was purchased form the Samsung online store.  However, I'm not aware if that was through the Canadian distribution channel or for the Samsung site for delivery to a different country.

Right because Rogers is still operating their old 2G network and the phone can use 2G (or they use other 3G bands).

Rpgers. Bell, and Telus all use bands 2 and 5 for HSPA (3g). The Rogers 2g/GSM network is also on bands 2 and 5.

That wouldn't be accurate if the phone was purchased from Samsung Canada as they would not sell any device that didn't have band 2 on HSPA.  I suspect that the specification that you were looking at might have been for a different variant of the device sold elswhere in the world but known as the same model number.

@zauggsarah 4G won't help in your case.

  Again, 4G speed plan only improves the data, voice for everyone in PM still uses 3G

You need to check for compatible phone or change to Koodo which gas VoLTE, ie voice will work on 4G network

Right because Rogers is still operating their old 2G network and the phone can use 2G (or they use other 3G bands).

@dust2dust, sadly I have no way of putting a different SIM in my phone right now, but my old carrier was Rogers, and I was able to call freely then.

@softech does that mean my phone wont work with public mobile, no matter what I try? (since its missing some of the frequencies)

zauggsarah

@softech, I got my phone directly from Samsung. Haven't tried calling in other areas of the city yet.

@zauggsarah you are right, A12 Nacho is not regular A12 sold in Canada, i think.  it lacks the 1900 band on Pm

Your phone specs

3G bandsHSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100

4G bands1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40, 41

Can you try your sim in another phone to see if the service works? Can you try a different sim in your phone to see if the phone works?

Where did you source the phone?  If it was bought locally then it should be fine. The reason why I suggest your phone is fully compatible is that there's only 2 bands that calls run on, bands 2 and 5 on 3G.  Pretty much all phones carry both of these bands.
