Rogers to increase wireless network spending

Rogers needs to spend more on their network. When I was with Freedom Mobile, I found Freedom's download speeds to be faster. I know Freedom has some bad areas with reception issues but that will change in the next couple of years. Freedom's speeds will leave Rogers in the dust unless they start investing more heavily on their infrastructure. Rogers has the money to spend since they did make a net wireless profit  of 2.138 billion dollars.

Telus and Bell in my opinion have the best networks in Canada.

more competition the better!

@Luddite, I don’t know about you, but I’m waiting somewhat upset, that Start.ca hasnt yet rolled out their IPTV packages yet.  I’ve been waiting since I first was it mentioned, I think now over a year ago

i keep looking at vmedia, but the requirement to outlay so much upfront, including stupid deposits on rental equipment if you don’t purchase or already have required hardware, is just ridiculous.

Heck, even Bell has their altTV offer, but if you’re not an internet subscriber with them, you can’t get the TV.

Nice! Thanks for sharing this information. My sister is with Fido (which is Rogers). I'll let her know.

I like start.ca  for my home network, but then I do not get TV except via my $15 aerial. Robot LOL

When I was a Rogers customer, the Rogers network was a joke in my home area. This was during the pre-LTE days.  At the time, both Mobilicity and Wind had better data speeds. Even more shocking was that both also had better signal strength/coverage (in the Mimico area of Toronto), while Rogers had dead spots when you stepped into a regular house-type buildings.

As always, speeds and coverage are going to vary greatly based on area and of the tower serving your location.

@Michael77, you appear to have a need for sheer speed.  I hope you have gigabit internet and speed test the connection regularly.  😀

That said, quality of service is not measured by a single figure of merit.  Speed is but one attribute.  For most applications, latency has taken a front seat to speed. If you think freedom is good, think again.  It may be fine when you are the only one on the tower.  Load it up and watch performance sag.  One of their issues is tower density or lack of same.  At the salt mine, there is only one tower close by.  I really enjoyed the service back in the day when very few of us used wind.  By the time I left, a lot of people in the building were on wind.  Without additional infrastructure, they network just can't cope.  This is another figure out merit, consistency.  Anyway, all the major brands are fine.  They may have their weaknesses here and there.  By and large, the experience is relatively consistent.  That's all we need to consume the meager amount of data allotment each month.

FWIW, Rogers gives me the best user experience at home.  I live in a neighborhood where NIMBYism is arguably the highest in the 416 region.  There won't a lot of change no matter how much the carriers throw at the problem.

@dna2016,

Thanks for your comments. I agree.

I think Rogers' home internet is very good. Now it's time for Rogers to focus on their cellular network.

@Michael77

Very interesting article, I definitely agree with you statements.  Rogers needs to step their network game up on the wireless front for sure.  I think they've been spending much of their time on the home internet platform and put the wireless network aside for quite some time.  Looks like now they're realizing they need to put the focus on wireless again or they'll begin losing their subscription base.  The wireless expectation from consumers now are very high, can;t have dead spots anymore, and LTE/4G needs to be pretty much available everywhere we go.

Thanks fo sharing.
