Roaming?

I'm in the US for the next few days, I had a plan that said it had unlimited canada-US minutes, and it wasn't working so I thought that maybe meant that I could only call from Canada to US. So I switched to the Canada and US plan that says it should work in Canada and US. Texting, MMS 5G Data - everything works but I can't make or receive calls.

@Brisby5 There should be a symbol at the top of your phone that shows what you're connected to. It's possible you're on 4G or 5G before you make a call, and then you'll see it drop to 2G when you're on a call.

not all phone gives you 2G option, so yours don't have it

you can try leaving it as Automatic and hope the phone will drop to 2G.  if not, then sorry, you can't use voice call in US

I'm sorry, in the network selection it gave me a choice of 4g or 3g. I picked 4. Other than that I'm not sure how I know if it's dropping to 2g or not. I know that it always says 5g when I'm home though

@Brisby5 Is it switching to 2G when you make phone calls? AT&T 5G can be problematic at times. If you're making calls on T-Mobile 4G, then VoLTE is working for you. If it's dropping to 2G when you make calls, it's not VoLTE compatible. The 2G workaround is limited in coverage though, and will also be completely shut down soon.

Sorry, you guys were right. I switched to T-Mobile network instead of at&t and it works. The at&t one showed me 5g at the top, when I switched to T-Mobile it doesn't show that anymore, but the voice works. I checked the list and didn't see my phone, it's a OnePlus Nord N10, but it does work apparently. Just weird it seems everything works 5g with at&t but voice. Guess better to used T-Mobile with 4g and voice than 5g with no calls

@Brisby5 Again, what phone do you have? It makes no difference whether you have a roaming add-on or a Canada/US plan; if you don't have a VoLTE whitelisted phone, phone calls likely won't work (text and data are fine). This is because the US shut their 3G networks down a couple years ago, so you need the ability to make phone calls on 4G or 5G (VoLTE). This has been an issue for a couple years though, so if it was in fact a year ago you had it working with the same phone, then this might not be your issue.

If you tell us what phone you have we can help confirm it's a VoLTE issue, or alternatively rule that issue out.

Interesting. Last year I had the same phone but different plan and added the roaming to it and it worked in the US. Now it says it's connected to AT&T. I'll try switching it to T-Mobile and see if it works

Hey @Brisby5

A couple of things. What phone are you using? Is it VoLTE approved? Here's the link. Sadly a lot of folks end up getting this plan without realizing their phone isn't VoLTE approved.

If it is approved, go into your network settings and turn off automatic. Then pick T-Mobile and then make sure data roaming is turned on then reboot the phone.
