I have a Telus account already phone is on a plan and phone is paid for, hints why I’m trying to switch, but I see why it’s not worth the time to. Thanks for the input

isn't there a friend or family that has a personal computer that you can use? the procedure is easy. I just helped someone activate their account...

This isn't how to choose a phone number. That process sounds to be for the self serve account creation. The number must be first allocated to your account through an existing self serve account or during activation. Also, if you activated online, the self serve account would have already been created.
To activate service, you'll need to proceed to activate.publicmobile.ca.

I already tried putting my 10 phone number in the create an account box and that didn’t work, it just said I may have already set up an account or it’s an invalid number, but the number is a Telus number. Ya awesome right
