Potential scam call

Hey community,

I had a call from 115798838866 allegedly from Telus with a special promotion. Spoiler alert, it was likely a scam. The call display listed that the call from coming from Québec. The person at the other end was very difficult to understand. They rattled off a bunch of details including x amount of international minutes and unlimited data for $41.25 per month. They wanted to know which carrier I was with and which phone that I use. I told the guy that he should know which carrier I'm with and which phone I am using on the network. He asked if I was with Telus lol. After messing with the guy a bit I told him it sounded too good to be true and sounded like a scam, then ended the call.

I had thought that all Canadian providers were regulatorily required to block mal-formed numbers. That extraneous 1 in front is incorrect.

I answer every call. I seem to only get "fedex" or "dhl" and some chinese sounding recording with music as junk calls. I hate calling people and getting voicemail. I'll call or forget about it. I use the hide my number option. Only one person I know uses the block all unknown callers on their landline. So I use the 31 code in the contact number to call them.

I use DND at night.

There are cases that Public Mobile incorrectly adds a 1 instead of + or 011 on the call display. The reason that I suspect that this is a  Public Mobile issue is becuase of how Public Mobile also incorrectly adds the 1 in front for usage details too.

@CountyDownIeUk  I agree. There's no doubt that they were looking for that kind of information. Unfortunately there's likely somebody that they will scam.

And to ask the OP if was on Telus the caller could have checked here.  Although it is very possible that there are a number of non Telus numbers "ported in".

Also keep in mind that it is "the season" for scammers to collect email addresses and phone numbers. Perhaps is best to just not answer and let it go to voicemail. If it was important they would leave you and email and then up to you to decide to ignore or not. After they confirm your number is a mobile number then a text with a url in it for you to conveniently click???

I hope daughter was not injured!?!?!! and insurance did take care of damage.

Do you mean 'unknown' shown on display or a number you are not familiar with?

'Unknown' is standard for some medical institutions so yes, I do pick up those. Numbers/names starting with V<then long number> are either cold calls or scams.

Anyway, even police/government/inspectors/etc. will leave voice mail and call back number.

WHY do you believe person on the other side of the line is REALLY who is claiming to be?

I always ask them if their mother knows what they do for a job.....they "always" hang up on me.

@Yummy  Did you have a rotary dial telephone too, back 30 years ago?  They were 👍 great.

WHY do you pick up a call from unknown number at all??????? I can understand picking up a phone some 30 years ago where you Had to pay for call display but today there is no excuse for talking with strangers.

Why do you waste time talking to these people at all? Legitimate business will at least have fluent English/French speakers, no matter accent.

No wander people get scammed daily with such behaviour.

@mitchnet12   It could be scam  or it could be cold calling.  It is easy to "guess" your network provider by just checking your phone number.   Of course, the check is not perfect, that's why they thought you are Telus but in fact you are Public Mobile

There are more and more scams like this these days.  Be aware and be cautious
