Not receiving CIBC login verification SMS code. Verification call is fine

When I was trying to login in my CIBC account, it was asking for verification code which will be send to my phone number. After giving my cell no. I did not get the message. Then I switched to call option for the verification code. I got the call and the I login to CIBC account. 

I also tried with BMO account, both SMS and Call options works. 

Is there anyone facing the issue with CIBC login SMS verification code sent to public mobile number?

Thanks for the tip about using the app notification rather than the text message.

@RTinIB the main reason that text is not as good is that SIM Fraud is common and sort of easy for hackers.  Also, it is inconvenient if you travel and do not have roaming service there (as there is no way to receive text)

 

App notification or Authentication app is always a better method than text

 

With the CIBC issue, I guess you have to call them and ask why SMS is still a choice for you  🙂

The plot thickens. My bank's website says that push notification is more secure than text messaging for receiving the verification code. I guess this is because the text message is clear text. So I activated the push notification that can only be done with the phone banking app. During the setup process a verification code must be entered and text messaging is one of the options to receive the code. I selected this option and received the text message ok. I then logged into my online banking using the push notification for the verification code. That worked ok. Later I decided to try logging into the online banking using the text messaging for the code and that worked ok as well. Go figure.

I think that I may have solved my problem. I turned off push notifications for the verification code and now I can use text messaging to receive the code.

I am having no problems with incoming/outgoing calls and text messages. 2FA text for PM account login works fine. I called CIBC and they claim that the problem is not on their side. I will try your suggestion about turning off 2FA and then turning it back on.

@RTinIB are you getting regular incoming calls and text without problem?.

 

are you getting other 2FA text on your PM without probelm?  If it is over 20 days and assuming you are getting people's teet and 2FA test without problem,  it could be an issue with CIBC.  Call them and check

 

Also another thing is to try to turn off 2FA on CIBC for a day.  Then turn it back on and try to receive 2FA via phone calls and SMS and see if it works

I have been with PM for 20 days and still cannot receive a verification code text message when trying to login to my CIBC account. However I found that if I cancel the verification code panel, the online banking system displays a login panel and I can login without having a verification code. How's that for banking 2fa security?

I see... I just tried using same app and no extra verification was required. Maybe I had to do it very first time...

Some financial institutions are really notorious with these verification. Even though I allow cookies they send me email with the code every single time even though I said checked on 'remember me' or 'remember me for 30 days'.

Do they think that everybody has mobile phone?

CRA has an option to generate and you download 5x5 grid with the random codes. Every time you log in they generate 3 fields you have to fill based on that grid. Works great if you do not want to give them cell number or do not have cell phone.

Yes I am new to public mobile. I ported from Virgin mobile to public mobile on 6th Feb 2022.

That's why text is trouble.  

But I just checked, CIBC does not offer Authenticator as a choice to login, so, only Text, Voice call or email.

@aurangozeb  consider using Authenticator app instead of SMS or voice call.  It is more secure and it is easier if you go travel outside the country

Hi @aurangozeb 

if you need urgent to login to your back you can call them to set up by email if they have that option,
or waiting for 3 days and try Rebooting device.

@aurangozeb   Did you just join PM ?  If so, did you port your number or picked a new number?

If porting, usually it takes couple days for all the System generated text to come through.  Usually 3 to 7 days depends on the system.  How many days you have been with PM?  It has to do with the System has to slowly learn the new home of your phone number and some banks explicitly put a delay as well in case of SIM Fraud

When I log in into CIBC it does not send me any SMS. Let me know why it sends to you so I can try and report back.

depends on PM system security to verification sometime i take just 2 day for some other customer is take max to 5 day.

True @VIP_Tech , except the OP states both are working with BMO.

 

This could be related to CIBC short codes.  Indeed, if you've just activated there may be a period of transition, otherwise, this seems unusual.
