New phone not accessing mobile data even though turned on and permissions given

AmyB
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

I put my Public Mobile sim card from my old smartphone into my new cell phone. I then set up the new phone from Start with the old sim card. It appeared to be fine until I left my home and WiFi. Even though I had three bars for the Telus network, the phone couldn't access my mobile data to run Google Maps, open news items in the Google news feed, it would open the store flyers app Reebee and probably a couple of other apps. Sometimes wheels spun, sometimes I would get turn on the mobile data. (It was turned on - I checked more than once.) As well, texting was not working correctly. None of my texts to my sister in another city went through to her - I got a message with three choices - turn on the mobile data, change to SMS/MMS messaging or delete. I turned on SMS/MMS but the texts still didn't go though. Meanwhile, I was able to text two other friends and get texts back with no problem. I could look up and read an article on my Guardian app but any article from The Guardian that appeared in the Google news feed, would not open. I kept being told I was offline and to turn my mobile data on. It was on. I have checked for app permissions too. That doesn't seem to be the problem. Also, when I look at data usage, it keeps saying 0. That makes sense because my phone obliviously isn't using my mobile date. I have lots of data available on my account. I am stumped. Please help.

Well we have different phones and my APN is correct. Show me a pic of the screen that appears differently to mine.

Hi, when I go to the edit access point screen, the heading in your first picture match my phone's headings. But, I have many more headings that I don't see in your fist picture or the second one. I am hesitant to make the changes because things look quite different.

@AmyB

Yes type in the APN settings to match mine and then tap save. You could reset them but you won't want to do that as that is what your phone has already done is defaulted to the telus settings. But don't worry about that atm. Just edit in the pm APN settings and then test and we will go from there.

Should I type mine to match what you have? If I do and it doesn't work, can I reset them back to what they were somehow?

How does it look like

from the last screenshot you post, I don't see anyone with Public Mobile or sp.mb.com

@AmyB

Tap the telus SP setting. That should give you the edit APN screen.

By the way, under Mobile network, telus, I went back in, then tapped advanced, then network. I was able to choose Public Mobile for the first time. However, it still says Telus at the top. I tried to see if I could open stories on the Google newsfeed and still got no internet. Should I go to the pencil by Telus and erase it and type in Public Mobile?

Here is the picture. Except, after trying each radio button, one remains clicked - the top one. IMG_20220203_165124.jpg

@AmyB

Each phone has slightly different settings to Access the APN. These are mine...

Edit:

Once I tap on the mobile network it goes to edit APN.

Sorry. After I uploaded the picture, I couldn't type anymore. I went into Networks and clicked on the pencil beside Telus to see what was there. I got the picture in the previous post. I tapped Network Public Mobile and it does nothing. Should I erase Telus and type Public Mobile here? It isn't under the APN or VPN.

When you are on the screen that shows the APN go to the 3 dots At the top right and tap it then tap edit. Then edit each line to match the APN listed. Then tap save. Then test by sending an MMS and accessing the internet. Sometimes small adjustments may need to be made to the APN for everything to work.

How do I get it to say public mobile?

@AmyB   Click the + on the top right to add a new profile and start filling in the entries

I think when You save, you can put in a name Public Mobile

Make sure the radio button is select on the new APN profile you just create

How do I get it to say public mobile?

@AmyB

You need to go to Access Point Networks to edit your APN ad your current one is for telus who is not your provider despite it being the network you want to use each provider ( public mobile) has their own APN to access the network.

After taking the picture in the last picture showing the TELUS SP sp.telus.com and TELUS Services services.telus.com radio buttons plus IMS ims and TELUS Services services.telus.com screen. Neither radio button was selected. I tried one and then the other. Neither made the Google newsfeed stories appear. I got the dinosaur and no internet screen.

@AmyB

You don't want telus as your mobile provider you want it to say Public mobile or mobile internet or sp.mb.com.

Can you check the APN Settings and see if it is the same as what @darlicious suggested above?  Maybe screenshots if some entries are different:

  • Swipe up from the home screen, to access your apps.
  • Tap the Settings app.
  • Tap Connections.
  • Tap Mobile networks.
  • Tap Access Point Names.
  • Tap the Access Point you would like to check. (there should be one about Public Mobile)

@AmyB

You need to manually edit your APN. If your phone is running the Android OS 8.1 you will need to update your OS to a later version in order to edit your APN.

@AmyB

Umidigi phones are one of those with more trouble with APN settings

Let do it slowly, can you make outgoing calls and receive incoming calls?

If you can, can you show us screenshot what is current setup on the APN?

Hi, The old phone worked really well. I put a new Public Mobile sim card in the old phone to set it up for my husband who had no phone. It seems to work fine with the new sim card.

AmyB
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

Hi, Thanks. I ordered the phone from Banggood.com. I have used the site before as have my sister and brother-in-law. I believe they are reputable. I tried tying in the *#0* in the search bar in settings. Nothing appeared.

AmyB

Hi, Thanks. Here we go. I got an Umidigi A11 Pro Max. I did a factory reset this afternoon and did a manual set up rather than a transfer from the old phone which was a Xiaomi Redmi Global Note 4. Right now I have made the phone forget my home WiFi so I can see if any changes I make are working. I did a search for VPN and clicked on it - it says no VPNs added. My sister got the exact same phone for Christmas. Her phone is working fine.
