I’m ready to activate my new SIM and start my plan. I want to transfer my current phone number from a different provider. What are the steps I need to take?

So there is a piece of missing information about the process to install the esim in the phone you are using with your current provider, this is what has caused me problems, and I believe it is the same for others. I will try to clarify the procedure in steps to point out where there will be an issue.
1) Leave old sim active in phone and download/install PM app.
2) Follow install instructions and prompts
3) You will receive a text from your old carrier to respond yes this is where there is a problem with the Esim install. The new Esim is now registered as the primary sim but is not yet able to send sms. You must use the sim from your last provider. So when you respond yes to the text it does not go through.
4) Go to your sim manager and reselect your old provider as the primary sim then reply to your text to the old provider to authorize the transfer.
5) When you see the sms has gone through change the primary sim back to PM.

@Amy97 you can request porting in your number during activation
First make sure your current account with the other provider is active. Find out the account number there
Then Subscribe a plan here and go through payment step.
After the payment, you will be asked to either pick a new number or bring in your number. Provide the account number from the other carrier as the porting info
Once activation completed , still have the other provider sim card in your phone. Your old provider will send you a SMS and ask your permission for the porting. You need to reply YES within 90 mins for the porting to complete
Once replied yes, you can put your PM sim card in a phone and wait for incoming calls to come. Reboot your phone ever 30 mins and test incoming call from another line. If incoming call reaches your PM sim card, then the Porting is completed

@Amy97 activations seem to work better through the App. So if you don't have the App, I suggest you download that and activate that way.
I've ported numbers directly through the activation process, they went great. Ensure to use the previous account number (not the IMEI). Others suggest you activate with a new number (temporarily) then request the port afterwards when you account is up and running.
Check to see if your number can be ported from this Koodo website (Telus owns Koodo and Public Mobile), so, same allowances here:https://secure.koodomobile.com/checktransfereligibilityparrot/default.do?lang=en&appname=otherportal

Leave the old SIM in your phone and reply with YES confirming you are porting over to PM.
Also, you r old account MUST be active to complete the porting so don’t cancel your previous carrier account.
You old SIM will continue to work for about an hour until porting is completed. Then power off your phone and swap the SIMs.
Welcome to PM!
