HI All,

I always think we only have number display on Caller ID but not name display.  I bumped into this thread from 2017, so, was name display included before and gone?

Caller ID (CID) is built into the networks and included for free on all Canadian plans by all Canadian operators, including Public Mobile.

Name Display (CNAM) is layered onto CID. On the Telus (and Koodo, and Public) network it is not included for free. It is provided to subscribers with business lines/accounts. It can be provided to other subscribers who specifically pay for this service. (I remember, years ago, that CNAM was the latest-and-greatest new thing, Telus automatically enabled it because they knew people wanted it. Until it was realized that most people want CNAM to display names of incoming callers but do not want CNAM to display their personal information every time they dial out, so now Telus automatically disables it unless people specifically want it active and pay for the privilege.)

On Bell, 3G/UMTS and 4G/VoLTE each have their own CID systems, only VoLTE CID supports CNAM (as of 2022), and of course this means the device must have VoLTE coverage. I couldn't find any technical information about CID and CNAM from Telus, but I think it's reasonable to assume that Telus CID and CNAM are functionally implemented the same ways as their Bell counterparts.

Interesting one.

For those with business, it could be a name lookup from Hiya for those using Samsung

But seems interesting with the solutions on that thread:

It only works if the person calling sends their name. ie. they are a business, home phone thorugh specific provider, or rogers/fido customer.

I don't recall myself seeing names from personal phones , but again most of my incoming have a contacts on my phone, so, it is hard to tell.  No, don't want to delete a contact yet just to test.  🙂

I looked back in my call history and I have a smattering of names displayed that aren't in my contacts. I also have some region indicators. And no, not names of people, just companies. But maybe it stopped more recently...what with all the other disfunction going on around here.

HI@will13am   honest, I am not sure.  But I see this post from 2017, couple Oracles on that too, so I am curious

actually, you replied there too:

@hTideGnow , are you sure about that or is the dialer app picking up name information from the contact list?
