My data type is showing 4g but my plan only has 3g

I have the 15$ plan with 250mb of 3g but my phone sets the data prefered type to 4g. Do I need to change to 3g only and does it affect my data usage?

Its actually better for you data usage as many data thirsty apps detect that they are on the throttled connection they become more frugal we it comes to data. 

I'm also on small data like you and I restrict my background data heavily, otherwise I won't make it much past the midcycle. I do off my data frequently, but since restricting background I don't have to be religious about it. Before, it was a must

Depending on where you are 4G may have more strength than 3G does your phone have an auto option?

Yes, leave it as is. The 3G plans run on LTE, but throttled to 3G like speed (3mbps).

No need to change anything. Let your phone decide. You will get LTE latency with capped 3G speeds
