I just received a message welcoming me to USA and informing me to add roaming although I am not in nor near the USA.
How would it pick up USA towers? And will I be charged for this somehow?

HI @Marlee8 Luckily you are with a Prepaid provider, you won't get extra even thought you are really roamed.
But thing like this usually becaue you are close to the border and there is a much stronger US signal. If you live close to the border, it is better to use Manual network selection and pick Public Mobile so you won't get these annoying text all the time
or, you can try to find out which US provider is that, maybe you can get better, cheaper US plan. Some of those include unlimited North American calling 🙂

If stationary with a constant US signal...your first reply would be the best way to proceed if the phone is stuck on US tower.
Disable Automatic Network selection...then manually select PM.
I'm usually just passing through the area..so self corrects shortly.

But wait...getting the message means you've connected to the tower which means you will only get texts and your calls and data won't work. Isn't that correct? Sure, passing through, whatever, I think I've seen that in Abbotsford BC and then you're back.
What we don't know is whether the OP is passing through or is stationary.

I get the same nag when driving through Grand Forks BC....or if I get to close to Detroit River in Windsor Ont.
Ignore it.

I get that all the time when near the US border. Since PM is a pre-paid service, you won't be charged any extra.

You will not be charged. It would seem that your location has a better reception of a US tower than others. South Island? Turn off automatic networks and scan and select Public.
