Is Public Mobile internet being throttled/crippled? (example: CNN app)

Here is a weird thing. I was trying to watch some news on the go  via CNN app (android) using PM data. I have a subsription via Rogers  for CNN live stream.

The  app either  crashes or reports network difficulties , asks to check network connectivity...

However, it works just fine on wifi, other mobile networks, even via VPN.. The only case where  it does NOT work, is naked PM internet ....

Wth?

Yeah - since it worked on Wind, it seems unlikely that they would specifically be targeting PM/Telus.  Much more likely just an issue with CNN's geolocation service or a routing issue.  At least you've got VPN though.

Hrmm.  In that case, I have no idea.  Could be that CNN has some issue recognizing your PM IP correctly.  Or it could just be a weird routing issue still (US and international feeds might be streatming from different servers)

OK, thanks, it is a minor issue anyway, I can always use VPN.

hi..

i would run a speed test a couple times to determine if there is a reception issue....as with any network, so more people use it at the same time so less speed....

but for sure the speed test will tell you more..

cheers

speed is excellent, LTE, streams HD  netflix no probs

@MVP ahhh, it's the US feed that doesn't work?  Does that work with other Canadian providers?

yes, it worked with wind and fido mobile, and all sorts of wifi, haven'y tried others.

The thing is, I should be licensed to watch  US stream via Rogers.

Maybe CNN/Rogers think that I'm not in Canada?

MY IP shows uo now as 142.169.78.xxx , which is geolocated to Montreal, QC 🙂 LOLO

It's a Rogers subscription, but the video is still being streamed by CNN.  It's exceedingly unlikely that there's any kind of shady Rogers/Telus fighting going on.  More likely, it's just an issue of bad routing between your phone's direct connection and the CNN video server.  That's why it works fine when you go through VPN.

Hmmm... or maybe it is some sort of licensing/geolocation issue.
CNN app has two streams, domestic (US) and International.
PM allows me to watch the latter, but the former gives errors..

Did they ban PM in the US by any chance? 🙂

maybe watching will bring  you over your cap?

I dunno, I am able to watch video without any lag, of course it drains my data like mad.

I.E about 20 min of 720p youtube video almost drained 1 gb of data.

It is reasonable data flow for an HD video. Youtube/netflix work just fine for me too,

the only  thing that does not is CNN via Rogers subscription. Maybe it is some sort of under-the-carpet war between Rogers and Telus....

Reception/speed is excellent. Even if I connect via VPN using PM data, it works,

but via naked PM data it does not... Something fishy...

No throttle on my phone.

Maybe the area you are in have a bad receiption?
