The two ways to keep the number and the plan are to 1. keep paying for it. Or 2. pay for the plan every 4 months. You pay. You get 30 days of service (that you won't use). It suspends for 90 days. You pay again before those 90 days. So every 4 months is your cheapest option.
Buy vouchers online from like recharge.com amongst others and using a North American voip app or the ability to dial a North American toll free number, dial 1-855-4pu-blic and apply the voucher. Then keep a close eye on the account to make sure it renews when you pay. The toll free will tell you this too. Don't leave it too close to the 90 days in case it has any problems.

Hello! In order to keep the number you will have to either:

1. Drop to the cheapest available plan and keep paying for that during the whole duration you are away. 
2. Let your account suspend by not paying the bill, and then pay for the account before the 90 Day window expires. Rinse and repeat as necessary

@Zxz1960  You can turn off auto subscribe and keep you plan in suspended state for 90 days . So on the 85 day make manual payment for a month and turn off auto subscribe again and you can rinse and repeat every 90 days untill your back and keep same number and plan
