* HELP CHOOSING A PHONE!!! *

Hi all,

My LG G5 need replacing.

Are any of these unlocked phones good for PM?  I want to go to Staples (1st choice) tonight to buy one.  Or maybe Canada Computers. I don't want to break the bank. I don't need amazing features:

STAPLES:

https://www.staples.ca/unlocked/directory_unlocked_20051_1_20001?fids=&pn=1&sr=true&sby=1&min=&max=

CANADA COMPUTERS:

Thanks!

Also too late but gotta give some love to the Asus ZenFone 3, which you can buy unlocked from Staples, Best Buy, or Amazon. For a cheaper phone, I'd probably suggest the Moro E4 Plus.

I guess I am a bit too late with this suggestion.  Canada Computers has the axon 7 mini on sale.  It is not a bad price for pretty descent spec phone.

Thanks 1000 times for all your help!

I was off-line for a little ...during that time, i talked to my nephew...he ran out to Canada Computers where he lives since they had 3 and got me the phone. He's got a young kids and bills to pay, so i insisted that I will pay him back.  To that end, I had to keep the cost down.

Wish me luck with the Zest I got.

This is a GREAT community!

More helpful than dealing with any of the CSR's from Robbers, Hell, Telus, or any of the big box company's.

Yay! 🙂

Staples is a very expensive place to buy smart phones.  Canada computers is not much better.  Amazon might be worth a look.  The LG G5 is a pretty good phone, so some of the budget phones mentioned might be quite the step backwards.

@TheOldVRYes that one.

I hate it when posted links don't work.   the walmart link showed 129 and buddy is going off the price he paid.    As i said (not havng seen teh best buy site), I would not pay more that $50-60. now less.

I'd really like to get that one from Canada Computers. Price is compfy for my tight budget.

Would have to call my newphew to get it for me since they close in 45mins.

Understood.... hope your nephew is kind enough to help out with an upgrade... 🙂

Good luck!

@cindy2415 - thanks for clarifying your needs.

Would you have a Costco membership, or know someone that does?

they have a couple of Acer phones - and if you are able to go up to $200 they have a decent acer with a 5.5 inch screen which is easier to use. here is the Amazon link:

Acer Liquid Zest Plus 16GB DS 5.5" Display 2GB Ram 4G LTE 13MP- Factory Unlocked Phone - (US Warranty) (Blue) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01NBWS96T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_7WyYzbHVMNYY8

Otherwise they have the $100 version too...

Does anyone know if that Canada Computers Acer Zest will work on PM?

The specifications on their site says this:

TechnologyGSM / HSPA / LTE
Supported 3G BandsHSPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
Supported 4G BandsLTE
Data Transfer SpeedHSPA, LTE Cat4 150/50 Mbps

I'm confused because one of the community discussions dating back to 2015 on the PM site said:

Public Mobile uses these Frequency spectrums:

3G: 850/1900 MHZ

4G LTE: 1700/2100 MHZ

4G LTE Advance: 700 MHZ ( Side note: This frequency isn't available as of yet, Telus needs to build and fully assemble this, and Handsets need to have this frequency built-in to fully take advantage of this particular spectrum)

Can anyone advise if i should go and buy this now?

Thanks

How about this Zest everybody?

I'm older, and on a fixed income...i may have to forgo the 2Gb at this present time. Need to eat. LOL.

Windows phone? Still haven't learned Windows computers. Too old to learn Windows phone too. LOL

Craigslist and Kijiji are all fine and dandy for a young person.  I think it's safer and more suitable for me to go to a store.

Thank you all for helping so far.  This is an AMAZING community of people, ready to help out!

I'll throw my support in for the Acer Liquid Zest Plus.  My in-laws both have the phone operating with PM without any issues.  Does everything they need quickly, has a large display and a massive 5000maH battery, no real bloat-ware on the device.  Can't go wrong.

i would not get any phone with less than 16 gb memory. 8 is just too little, once the OS is on there.  I just had to help a friend transfer form his K1 ( a couple months old) because it was telling him constantly out of memory....

and android version 5.

ShaunC13,

I feel so stupid. This is the Zest.  I sent you the link for the Z5.  I'm on a fixed income, so was really looking for a cheaper phone.  Are any of the cheaper ones able to work on PM ...and work at 4G speeds?  I see Canada computers has this in stock. ...most of their cheaper phones have to be ordered in.  I need tonight since I cannot figure out what's wrong with my main phone and really do need to reach my kids via the whatsapp.

Understood, you only need it for basic stuff.... but still, at least get 2GB of RAM as you still want the phone do do what you need quickly.....

Thanks everyone so far!

I was thinking the Acer Zest and Samsung J1, I checked the one site "will my phone work" and it wasn't all too clear since there are so many diff models of each model of phone. it's mind boggling!

Thought the site said the Acer Zest wouldn't work. But I see that you are quite happy with it!

I couldn't find the exact model of Samsung J1 on that site so was gonna take a risk.  So, the Acer you have is this one?

How much are you looking to spend?

Don't go too basic if Android, at least get a Snapdragon 625 or better chip would be my advice.

The 615/616 is straight up slow for anything more than basic stuffs...

I know for sure this one works:

Acer Liquid Zest Plus 5.5

Basically it needs to support the following:

Telus Mobility Radio frequency summary

This is a good site too although I've found some of the more obscure phones are not listed:

https://willmyphonework.net/

I am sure at Staples someone will be able to help you once you choose a model. 🙂

I just picked up the Acer Liquid Zest Plus for my wife from Staples has no issues on the PM network.  Other then that I can't add much she is new to Android and I have never used it.  But Dual sim expandable memory was a good place to start for us.
