Getting a bit of a run around..

In a previous posting I asked about not being able to send/recieve pictures through text.  I have tried chaning all settings, did a factory reset, enabled data and kept retrying my APN settings about 10 times figuring it was something I was doing incorrectly.

Then after contacting Technical Support they said my plan does not include picture messaging and I have to upgrade to a more "substantial" plan in order to recieve pictures via Text. Also that I should address the community for further inquiries.

Here is My Plan Summary:

Here's what your base plan includes:

Provincial Talk and Canada Text

$35 per 30 days

This also includes:

  • Unlimited Provincial Talk
  • Unlimited Canada-wide Text and Picture Messaging
  • Call Display
  • Call Waiting
  • Call Forwarding
  • 3-Way Calling
  • Voicemail

Just wondering if anyone else is being told they need to "upgrade" to recieve picture messages.

Seb,

Thank you for the clarification.

Your post didn't contain the OP's name; I therefore thought that anyone knowledgeable about the matter was being sought for an up-to-date reply.

Cheers!

Seb,

What update are you seeking?

I believe the matter was settled that MMS can be sent without a data plan as long as the APN settings are properly configured for Internet data and MMS, and that data is "on".

Any update?

@Rouke,

Have you been able to configure your APN and send MMS ?

A follow up would be appreciated !

Hello Colleen,

I have 2 Moto G phones, using the Android OS. Sending and receiving MMS (picture messages) have worked from the day they were purchased.

The Access Point Names (APN) must be configured for data and MMS. Further, data must be "on" in order to send or receive a picture message. A data plan is not necessary for MMS. What is necessary is a data portal created by data being "on".

I have been with Public Mobile for a few years now, always had data on my android phone and have NEVER been able to picture message with or without data!

^In correct, Have been extensively involved in the Wireless industry for over a decade and picture messaging works just fine with out a Data Plan as long as your Data is enabled. However back in CDMA days for a while you couldn't Picture Message on Blackberry Devices at all on Telus. You had to email your pictures

I used to sell phones for Telus for the past 2 years....walk in to any telus or koodo store and ask them if you can picture message without data and see what they say. Plans that specify picture messaging is included but countless customers unable to use it without data. It worked on feature phones but for some reason get an android or iphone without data and ur picture messaging doesn't work....add data and boom it works.

@Rick, For almost all Providers in this country you don't need Data Plan to use MMS. You do however have to have your Data enabled with Proper APN settings in order for MMS to work.

Hello Rick,

I beg to differ with you.

A phone user, wishing to send or receive MMS (picture messaging) does not require a data plan. What the user requires is that data be in the "on" position to create a data portal or, in other words, Internet connectivity.

If you are sceptical about what I have written, please google the subject matter. I'm sure that you will agree with me after doing so.

Cheers.

Sorry to tell you this but picture messaging requires data. Switch the data in your phone to on and see if that helps, it might since you do have picture messaging on your plan. For sure if you switched to the $45 plan with 1GB then your picture messaging would work no problem. The reason is pictures are sent over the internet and with out a data plan enabled you are unable to send pictures. APN settings matter as well when you change your plan make sure you have APN set up properly too.

@Rouke - It may have been a mistake. I have asked our Specialists team to review your issue again. They will be getting back to you by tomorrow.

I appreciate that you already tried factory restting your device and ensure that data is enabled. The issue might be with APN settings as you mentioned.

Could you please let us know what phone are you using?
