Freedom Mobile Offering Existing 3g Customers LTE for Free

Michael77

My sister got this message from Freedom Mobile:

"We're excited to tell you, we've added LTE on your existing plan! All other plan details stay the same. Restart your phone for faster data bit.ly/2lVlfYa"

This is a very smart idea. Freedom Mobile will keep more of their customers now.

Price wise if you think they waited 3+ years their total cost is actually higher than big3 though despite lower monthly rates

Anyways network still sucks (I have used a few sims for test purposes and would never wish that service on my worst enemy)

Their network is indeed improving, like it or not.

Since they got the new spectrum, rolling it out is fast, especially now they have shaw.

If you have a good plan, its useful.

Now 3g users can use lte, which is giving many old timer upgrade they waited for a while.

It could also cause signficant problems for people trying to make or receive phone calls.

As I no longer have my main line with Freedom Mobile, I don't have first hand experience, but what I can say is that when I call a friend in Kitchener, Ontario who is using Freedom Mobile, the majority of calls go straight to voicemail without even ringing.  She also complains that family members try to call her and that most of the time, the phone never rings but that she just immediately gets missed called notifciations or voicemail messages.  This is in a full signal area and it's been going on for more than a month.  So sure, data speeds are improving over at Freedom but good luck with phone calls.

Actually, they are upgrading their band 4 to LTE, so there are WAY more devices that can be utilized.

I have also Freedom line and I have an excellent coverage where I live. Freedom likely wants to unload some users from 3g so it is not too congested if they are on LTE. In some areas this has helped people see much better data speeds on 3g.

They have been aggressive with their network upgrades especially with rolling out newly acquired spectrum so I expect Freedom to offer some serious competition to the big 3. I for one, will never let go of my Everywhere Plan $50 that comes out to $27 a month that includes roaming in the US and Canada for calls, SMS and data.

@casperr,

I am looking forward to the real competition soon. Hopefully the Canadian Government will allow US and European mobile companies to compete with the Big Three. It's time for real competition. 🙂

They are deploying LTE here, so even if your phone is ready, the network may not have switched over yet:

Band 66 and very few phones run it

The pessimist in me thinks this is a move to prevent existing 3G customers from jumping ship; I think Shaw felt more would've upgraded to their LTE plans by now but that hasn't happened (and with their current pricing doesn't make it very enticing compared to the Big 3 flanker brands).

But if this brings on more competition.... that's good. 🙂

@will13am,

The LTE is forever. All FM 3g plans are now LTE.

Are you saying that iphoneincanada is offering fake news?

@will13am,

It looks that way or FM changed their direction. Either way, FM is giving their existing customers LTE forever.

FM's LTE is really good. I know there are areas with reception issues but those will be fixed. I had FM LTE before and I liked it.

 Freedom Mobile is upgrading their LTE network. Some areas can access band 4 and band 7 LTE. I guess they want to merge their 3G customer into 4G and save AWS-1 spectrum for LTE.

If someone was still on an old plan with a good away toaming allowance, this could be great.  Sadly, I don’t believe their updated network is going to work for many of the customers, as band 60 (or is it 66) will not be on their current device.

i may be wrong, so please correct me if I am mistaken.
