Emergency Alert

Recently NS just sent out an Emergency Alert, this was real and not a practise. I did not receive this. I have an iPhone 6s and if I go to settings, notifications and scroll to the bottom there is no government alert option to select and turn on. How else can I fix this?

Yeah I will probably try calling Apple first

I see. There must be something so obvious with iPhone settings or network that we are all missing. How about calling Apple? Or do a back of phone, full reset on iPhone then do a restore. I have an SE that has same innards as a 6S.

There are many factors that will impact your ability to receive the alert including your location, or whether you are connected to the LTE network at the time of the alert distribution.

Sooooooo

Go to Settings......Cellular........Turn Data On........Cellular Options......Enable LTE to ON.

Or go to Apple Store and ask for help.

At first I thought maybe it was a public mobile thing and that’s why I didn’t get it but my 3 friends on Public mobile got the alerts So that’s not it

Spoiler

I did receive it back in November but I was also with a different carrier then. I did not receive the 2 alerts last Friday but my husband did sitting beside me in our living room. As stated before I do not have an option under settings, notifications for government alerts to turn on. I did all the google searches on how to turn it on before asking on here.  I wish it was that easy but it’s not so that’s why I posted to see if anyone could help me.

@Tiggerccino

Did you not recieve the last nationwide test on November 27th 2019? There have been 3 alerts in nova scotia since the beginning of the year. More info can be found at the above link.

Turn Government Alerts on or off

By default, Government Alerts are turned on for your device.* When you receive a government alert, you hear a special sound that's similar to an alarm. If you want to turn these alerts on or off, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Notifications.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom of the screen.
  3. Under Government Alerts, turn the type of alert on or off.*

*Government Alerts are supported when using a SIM card from a supported carrier. Your Apple Watch can receive these alerts if your iPhone can receive them and is nearby, or your Apple Watch is on a Wi-Fi network. With a cellular plan from a supported carrier, your Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + cellular) can receive these alerts without your iPhone nearby. For more information, contact your carrier.

*In some countries, you may not be able to disable Government Alerts.

No he is not. He is on a Canada plan with Bell. And that’s not the emergency alert I was talking about. None was sent for that. There were 2 Alerts sent on Friday April 24th for shots fired in the Halifax area. 5 days after the story you are talking about.

@Tiggerccino  Is your husband on a US providers plan or subscribed to recieve US alerts? It is to my understanding that as the RCMP fumbled around trying to decide how to word the alert Constable Heidi Stevenston gave her life to help thwart the killer. No alert was sent out because the killer was shot and killed before they had gotten their so called ducks in a row. You may be trying to fix a non existent issue.

yeah I have no idea! We had a government alert of a shooter in the area and that’s what ours was about. I didn’t get it but my husband did, we were both in the living room. I’m contacting Apple to see if there is another spot to make sure mine is enabled since I don’t have a spot inter settings and notifications to turn it on.

@Tiggerccino  You have done everything that you can from your end. Please note that the emergency test alert scheduled to go out in May has been cancelled due to Covid-19.

Ability to receive an alert: Consumers should check their specific device against their wireless service providers list of wireless public alerting compatible devices. If your device is not on the carrier list, it is not compatible. (Confirmed your device is on the list)

In addition, consumers should ensure that the SOFTWARE on their compatible device is kept up to date. Outdated software may affect a device’s ability to receive an alert even if it is compatible. (Confirmed)

Connection to LTE network: WPA-compatible devices must be connected to an LTE network at the time an alert is distributed. The symbols located in the upper right-hand corner of your device will help you to identify what network you are connected to.

However, it is important to understand that even if you’re in an area that has LTE coverage, what you are doing with your device at the time an alert is issued will impact your ability to receive it. For example:

  • If you have set your device to Wi-Fi only, you will not receive an alert.
  • If you are on a voice call at the time of the alert, you may not receive an alert. Voice calls may move your connection to a non-LTE network, like 3G, even if you are in an LTE area.
  • If you are in a location that makes signal reception difficult at the time of the alert, such as an underground garage, you may not receive an alert.

Device settings: The emergency alert will follow user settings:

  • The VOLUME of the alert will be the same volume as that which is set on your phone. Most devices have multiple setting controls for different features such as ringtone, media, notifications, and system. The Canadian Alerting Attention Signal is usually controlled by the Settings/Sounds & touch vibration settings (also known as Haptics setting).
  • If your device is set with a REMINDER feature, this may cause the alert to repeat until you acknowledge it. This feature can be turned off following directions in your device’s User Guide.
  • If your device is set to SILENT or DO NOT DISTURB mode, the alert will override the setting. This means that you will receive the alert at whatever user settings you have in place. You might not see or notice the alert even though your device has received it. The alert might be “hidden” with other notifications. You may need to scroll down to see the alert.

does this work for Canada or just US?

I think that data should also be enabled. Data setting is required to be on in order to receive MMS messages - even though it will not affect your data balance.

Yes I’d like to know that

If you are referring to "Emergency SOS" that's not it. If there is another setting please give instructions as to where it is hidden in the iPhone settings.

What solution do you suggest? Nobody else has come up with anything else that has worked? Everything everyone says my phone is already on or running correctly.

what software? I’m updated to IOS 13.4.1

This is the solution??????  Are you suggesting that millions of cell phone users are required to input the number sequences before they will get any emergency alerts?

BEER

You need to update the phone's software - this can be done manually or automatically. If the phone's auto update is disabled then you could turn it on or manually ask for the update.

Perhaps the reason you didn't get the alert may be that the battery was low and the phone in stand by mode or the phone was in an area of limited reception such as example close to and shielded by a metal object such as a toaster or refrigerator etc.

Thanks, I enabled it this way. Or at least I think I did. Still doesn’t show in Settings under notifications but I’m hoping it will work if there is a next time. I have the latest version IOS and LTE is enabled so not sure why it didn’t work the first time.

@Tiggerccino

Requires iOS version 11.3 or newer for WPA support.

Try enabling Test Emergency Alerts:

  1. Open the Phone app and tap Keypad.
  2. To turn it on: Enter *5005*25371# and tap

.You'll get an alert that says "Test alerts enabled."
  3. To turn it off: Enter *5005*25370# and tap

. You'll get an alert that says "Test alerts disabled.
