When I first got a cell phone many years ago I also didn't really understand the difference between data and wifi but I like the explanations given by some here especially the reference to data being wifi on the go. Very apt.
Try to remember that data is part of your cell plan and wifi is part of your internet plan and is only available while in the vicinity of your home or if you use free wifi from businesses that offer it. You can lose access to wifi if away from the source or have used up the cell plan data before your plan renews again or buy more.

Data is used for Internet. When you exhaust your plan's data any data bonus or data add-on will be used. You do not have to do anything in order to use such extra data. It will be seamless transition from plan's data to extra.

Hi @sparky2004 PM will use your regular monthly data first. If they are all used, then PM will start dipping into the add-on, paid add-on or bonus. Is that what you concern?
if you have trouble accessing data?

@sparky2004 was data ever work on your current device?
what phone do you have? brand and model?
first make sure Mobile data is enabled and you can test it out (you might want to also disable wifi so the device is really using mobile data)
let us know if there is any error

Data works if you don’t have wifi available where you are…think of data as wifi on the go. You will need to use up your monthly data first then it will automatically eat up your Add-on data.

Surf the internet until you use up all your mobile data.

Data is basically internet access through mobile service provider, as opposed to internet service providers wired into your home or through wi-fi areas.
Is that what you're asking, @sparky2004
EDIT: @sparky2004 -- if you're asking how to use data, well there's a plethora of information out there on the internet on ways to wisely use and save data consumption on data-limited plans.
The basics are:
